A cpu without PopCnt just won't boot. I used CPU-Z to check all mine. For Intel SSE4.2 is required, For AMD it's SSE4a.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Not taking into account the PopCnt instruction support, I have installed Windows 11 22H2 on a 1st generation 64-bit Intel Pentium 4 6xx CPU with 2GB RAM. So up to 23H2, if you bypass compatibility check you can install Windows 11 on any system you can install Windows 8 64-bit. Same requirements exactly.

Taking PopCnt into account, none of the usual workarounds work will now work for the 24H2 install media, MS have tightened up on the hardware checks.

I've made a hybrid usb with all the 23H2 files, except it has had its install.esd replaced by a 24H2 one. The usual workarounds can now be used to install/upgrade any machine. If the CPU has PopCnt I can successfully install and run 24H2. Without PopCnt it just won't run.

I am anything but surprised - consider my HP Pentium-N-driven laptop - technically unsupported - but running 24H2-based 11 Home happily.

Which is why you can work around the "unsupported hardware" issues on Intel Pentium and Celeron.

Thankfully I have better systems than that. The oldest one is my test laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, so I hope it supports the PopCnt instruction. Surely there will be some workaround for unsupported CPUs.

You've got a longer than that if you're prepared to stay on 23H2 until there's a workaround. 23H2 doesn't reach EoL until Nov 10, 2026.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Beta as native boot vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 4GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus the Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds as a native boot .vhdx.
I didn't say I will wait until 23H2 EOL. Until 24H2 is released and maybe a couple of months more, somebody will come up with a workaround. Most likely before the general release version in October or November 2024. So I will use this workaround to upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2. Why wait?

This is hardly unsupported hardware, but as my Eee PC1015px won't run Windows 11 23H2 now (graphics driver no longer works) and definitely won't run 24H2, I've decided to relegate it to Linux and have just bought this HP Probook x360 11. They were ruggedised education laptops. We used to have a similar 10" windows 7 one which was basically a ruggedised atom netbook bought for a child but I loved using it! Despite it being basic. There's just something about rubbery ruggedised laptops.

Most of them were celeron's and pentiums with 4gb but this one is an M3 8th generation with 8gb so will run Windows 11 a bit better - and I can pretend it's my Eee PC :-) Just for occasional use and cheap.

I would rather stay with Windows 11 22H2 than install Linux. Is like having a racing car and use it to go down town for shopping. I mean Linux has a limited hardware and software support compared to Windows, so from a general purpose computer you demote it to an advanced Chromebook, so a smart typewriter that connects to the internet. It is good for browsing and some light office work and that's it. No matter what Linux fans want you to believe it cannot do everything Windows can and it is certainly not that easy to use. No thanks I rather stick with Windows 7.

It’s not one I use often and it had Linux on before - I just thought I’d trying Windows 11 on it. It was fine on 21H1 but not now. With Linux on I just used it as a spare netbook for emergency web browsing.

Anyway the new rugged 11” one will have Windows on and replace it :-)

You're right. I did install Linux Mint on it and it's just not the same. I'm thinking the 10" netbook has reached the end of the road as it will only run Windows 11 23H2 with the basic Microsoft driver (stretched screen) and isn't going to run 24H2. Most Linux is too slow on it anyway and it just isn't Windows.

You know why Linux SEEMS faster than Windows? Because it has zero visual effects and almost no applications are running in the background. If you disable all visual effects in Windows, or even better switch to a classic Windows 98 plain gray theme, and you disable all services and background applications it will be as fast as Linux but much more useful.

Actually I find Windows 11 faster than Linux on that machine :-) . It just reminded me how slick Windows 11 is.
Or rather, Linux seems very slow on that machine. There is one that is similar speed to Windows 11 and one marginally faster that is very basic.

I did have another go at finding another driver for the netbook. I found mention of a modded version of the Vista 64 bit one (Sherry 1.3). Tried that and it made no difference. So I'm stuck with the Windows basic driver and a stretched screen. Not that I'm using the netbook much really - it was more just being able to run Windows 11 on it. But it seems it's reached the end of the road now (and will do completely by next year).

Bit of a shame as it's in good condition. But - very slow! For all the small, slim light laptops there, are, there aren't 10" ones any more.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

It might be slow and needs a little more patience, but it is adequate for internet use including watching YouTube, Netflix, Disney plus and other streaming services. I can relate, I have an HP Stream 7 tablet running Windows 10 32-bit on an Intel Atom with just 1GB RAM. I bet your netbook is a lot faster than my humble tablet. If you set quality to SD and you wait a few more seconds to load watching Netflix etc is not bad at all.
