Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware

Get out your fireproof raincoats and boots, people!

I. OTOH, suspect that it will just be a day like all days, filled with the events that alter and illuminate our times, and you will be there to see it all.

I honestly do not understand why anyone would want to dive straight into the first public release of Windows 11 when Windows 10 has years of MS supported life still to come.
Who's diving in? I've been using it for a little over two months on a fully compatible laptop (my System One). That's now been restored to it's W10 system image and awaits the upgrade on the 5th.

I've also been running it on my unsupported System Two. As a test I'll be keeping W11 on it after the public release, just to see what (if any) problems may arise after the official launch.

The rest of my machines are unsupported for W11. Whether they get a hardware upgrade or a 'bypass requirements' install depends on the results of the above test. I'll give it about 6 months before deciding, after all there's four years of life left in W10.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Yeah, I am aware of that, but I don't want to lose security updates.
No one knows whether you/we will loose any security updates and for all/any insiders know come Oct 5, if your rig is not up to the minimum recommended it may be the fat lady singing time and us running 11 on incompatible systems could simply be shown the door.

11 is working fine on my non-compatible CPU spare rig system and currently updating as and when. But Oct 5...........

Well, I don't want to damage my Surface as I am out of warranty, I am using it for school and stuff. So, I dont' want to break but hoping for the best for the 5th. Anyways 10 is good for now :D PS: I did try Windows 11 on here, it was fine but I guess as newer builds come, that things may break :(

Wise decision. I only use beta/preview software on a spare machine. My main rig will stay on 10 for a good while yet.

Yeah, well I don't want to lose online support either if I have any issues. Anyways, let's hope for the best on the 5th .I really do miss that wonderful tablet mode in Windows 11, well it's not a mode but it makes it a real tablet :)

Yeah, I am aware of that, but I don't want to lose security updates.
If you do install it I wonder if you would get any updates. If you stay with 10 you'll continue to get updates. But if you do opt to update make sure you perform a backup so you can go back to 10 if you need to.

You would use a system backup tool like, Aomie, and backup the system.. C drive. Then if you need to you can revert back to 10 from 11

I really personal never had a good time with 3rd party uninstallers or backups things, all my stuff is in OneDrive, I have the 365 subscription so I am all good :) I have my trusty Surface Recovery USB ready :) As soon as I reinstalled Windows 10, I have all my office, onedrive, just need to install zoom :)

Good luck with that. I would take the time to learn how to use a third party tool. You never know when you might need to use it.

Let's say you run into issues running your incompatible hardware with Win11.. the best way to roll back to Win10 is with backup software. It makes a full copy of your apps and the OS so it becomes fast and easy to restore everything so it works again.

Hi Bunny, the Surface Recovery Media Tool is the best way to recover my computer, it reinstalls Windows 10 20H2, it installs Office as well. :) Also all my files are always in OneDrive. I have no plans to go to Windows 11 except Windows update gives it to me as I will lose my support through Surface support. All I need is for school personal, Edge, Office, OneDrive, check all in Surface recovery. It's only zoom I need to install and Windows Live Thanks for your advise and have a good day!

I would avoid permanently replacing Windows 10 with 11 on my unsupported computer. I would wait a couple of builds to make sure most issues have been fixed and of course that it is still possible to bypass the checks for the upgrade.
