moving programs from the C drive to the D drive

Newbie to Windows 11: Is there an application that moves programs from the C drive to the D drive?

It seems that newer programs now just install on the C drive (no option for another drive).

In times past (previous version of Windows) I have been:
#1 Manually copying programs from C to D then
#2 Save each branch/folder of the registry (one at a time) to a file and modify path locations in notepad then apply registry changes.
#3 Reboot
#4 Delete the program from the C drive.

I hear that the permissions are much relevant since Windows 7
Please advise.

Most modern apps can be moved wherever you want to:



I would not attempt what you have done in the past with modern Windows Apps.

Where does it state compatibility with Windows 11 & UWP apps?

What @OAT said is the way to move UWP apps. You can also change the default location for them by going to Settings | System | Storage | Advanced storage settings. Under "Where new content is saved," change the drive for "New apps will save to."

It works fine with Windows 11. It is a one-click operation. But it's not recommended to moves ome programs that integrate tightly with the OS such as Edge and Office. See the list here Application Mover Important Notes

Windows built in'Move option only works with UWP apps.

Funduc's Application mover does not work with UWP apps, so they compliment each other.

Windows 11 ?home? does NOT allow moving so there are some tings that I need to check out before proceeding.

Microsoft is dropping support for UWP apps, so that option will soon disappear.

Personally, I'd recommend just do a reconfiguration to allow more space on the C: drive. Given that disk storage is actually pretty cheap nowadays, I just start with a large C: drive allocation and save myself the issues of having programs scattered around on different logical disks.

If it every some a time that you have to restore your Windows drive, you will need a matching in time image backup of the drive you moved your programs to. It's a whole lot easier to just keep all the applications in one place. Don't forget to have a well planned backup strategy for your system and consider that in the planning.

I move stuff like my Documents, Pictures, Videos, etc. to a data drive, that's accommodated by Windows capabilities. I also move my Thunderbird email profile to my data drive.
