Office 365 deactivated after upgrade

I upgraded my laptop from Windows 10 to Windows 11 through Windows Insider Program. And now Windows 11 Home 21H1 is installed on my laptop. However, when I was trying to edit a word document, it tells me I need a license key to activate the subscription. This is weird as the license key works fine on Windows 10 and it is not expired. Anyone knows what is going on?

p.s the os build is 22000.194

The activation of the Office 365 should not be tied to operating system, as long as software works there should be no problem re-activating Office 365.

I hope so. I bought the license three months ago from an online retailer. Not sure if it is the problem.

That's strange. I'm thinking if you have a Microsoft account, just log in to that. That happened to me awhile back where I had to reactivate Office 365. I didn't need a product key. See if that works for you.

When I log in to Microsoft, I can see my Account and my Microsoft 365 status through Settings:

Settings > Accounts > eMail & Accounts > myloginaccountname > Account Settings > Manage

And I'm at a page that shows the status of my Microsoft 365.

I had Microsoft 365 with Windows 10.
Microsoft 365 was still there when I upgraded to Windows 11.
I wouldn't expect my Microsoft Account and my subscriptions to change.

If it is a rare case, then it should be the problem on my side. I can't login MS account the seller sent to me. Glad to hear this is not a common case.

Hold up, Office 365 is a subscription model that you buy directly through Microsoft.

Did you buy a standard office license from an online vendor a few months ago? Did you actually switch from using Office 365 to using a perpetual licensed copy of Microsoft office?

I am not sure about that. After purchase, he sent me a Microsoft account for login. And I can activate Office with it. No problem using it on Windows 10. But it was deactivated several days after this device was upgraded to Windows 11. No license or product key.

I'm trying to think of a polite way of asking the seller whether the license was entirely legitimate.

One possible cause for suspicion: if the price was significantly lower than a year's subscription from Microsoft.

So the OP had to use the seller's MS account, not their own? That's not the way it's supposed to work.

Yes. The seller has massive accounts for this type and sell them one by one. That is what I know. The benefit is that it is much much cheaper.

Sounds like a scam to me. What's to stop the seller cancelling the subscription once they've sold them all then disappearing off the face of the earth (or web)?

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

I think it is sort of scam but no totally as I have been using it for several months. Now, I know it is not the problem brought by Windows 11 upgrade.
