PowerShell 7.3.4 and 7.2.11 has been released

These PowerShell updates with .msi files always impress me with their speed, efficiency, and self-cleanup. No leftover junk in Program Files, updates the version number in Installed Apps, and loads the new version (shows the new number) the next time Terminal is opened, without any restart required. Smooth.

Funny. I was just thinking about checking with you to see whether you got this one alright. I remember you telling us that yours wasn't updating properly, even after days of waiting. Maybe this .msi-install is the way for you to go from now on.

Nothing changed, I still have have to download it (MSI) and install it myself and I guess you are right this is the way to go.

Does this replace the default version, or do you still have both installed?

Assuming your 7.3.3 installation is in Program Files, where it should be, the 7.3.4 .msi will replace what needs replacing, keep what needs keeping, and update the entries in Terminal and in Installed Apps / Programs and Features. Smooth as glass.

So, this replaces the version originally installed with Windows 11? Initially it was an additional version added, so the old and new versions were on the computer, and you could run both versions. Has this changed?

There's still a Windows PowerShell AND a PowerShell. They co-exist. You can use either, but PowerShell (the one mentioned in this thread) is under continuous development, and a new version is announced every little while. Here's the menu from the drop-down caret in Windows Terminal:

No idea why the new powershell cannot replace the old, the crap about not everything working is an odd excuse, why is there no backwards compatibility. So many inconsistencies at MS, and over duplication and in the end a mess for the consumer.

Yeah guess I need to message Brink on the terminal as admin option on context menu tutorial and see why it's showing a list instead of auto opening to default profile PS or CMD if changed.. :/
But anyway I prefer just using the other as admin entries.

I made the mistake of installing PowerShell from Ms Store originally so it showed there was an update available but never found the newer version to install. I had waited for a while so I installed 7.3.4 from the link here. Still no good. Eventually what fixed it for me was to uninstall the .msi installer and the Ms Store version. On opening terminal it opened in the original 5 version and complaining that default profile was missing. Ignoring the error ran these commands

winget search Microsoft.PowerShell

winget install --id Microsoft.Powershell --source winget

(Not using the preview version.) That fixed it for me. Hopefully the next update will be automatically found and installed when next running the upgrade command.

EDIT, just checked the Ms Store version and only now shows the 7.3.4 version. I suppose I could have waited longer :look:

Same scenario here. I had the MS Store version which from reading is more limited compared to the non-store version so I did the winget as well to get to v7.3.4.0 and mines did open to the v7.3.4.0 version which required actually closing the entire Terminal window before opening it again. From what I read, not sure if I am understanding this correctly but the .msi version is supposed to get rid of the earlier versions including the original 5 version and only install the v7.3.4.0 version.

To run .NET Framework-based Windows PowerShell, the powershell.exe command is used
To run .NET Core-based PowerShell Core, use the pwsh.exe

I don't think you can get rid of the standard version,
