Any news if we'll get tabs for File Explorer? I know there's a few 3rd party options, but I was wondering if Microsoft will update File Explorer with tabs.

There is a app in the MS store called Files that is a good alternative to File Explorer.

I'm heavily reliant on file tabs. It just makes life easier and enables me to do things much quicker.

I'm a Directory Opus user and it is always open with at least 10 tabs.
Even if I do a restart without closing Directory Opus, Windows will open and Directory Opus will be sitting on the Taskbar with the same tabs as if I hadn't restarted. And to open another Opus window is just a matter of double clicking the Desktop. But I never need another window. I just open more tabs, if needed.

The annoying part is we had file explorer with tabs for a short period as part of the ill fated SETS experiment a few years ago in Windows 10. Nobody in MS can explain why they could not issue a cut down version of SETs with just the file explorer with tabs.

SETs itself was a disaster as nobody really understood a feature obviously designed by people eating funny mushrooms LOL.

Tried that, had problems with it. Kept saying "the program ran into an error and needs to be closed/terminated."

IMHO, things like new emojis and desktop stickers are a waste of time and money. It's a shame that we have to depend on third party software to make Windows what it should be while MS concentrates on fluff.

If somebody wants to try a Tabbed Explorer that's not complicated at all, that Clover thing is still floating around!
It's a simple program that just loads your Explorer windows in an old style Chrome shell, period!
It doesn't screw with your system settings, it doesn't mess with menus etc., it does what it says and that's all!
Note: The installer is in Chinese, I have the translation if needed.

My router's antivirus blocked the Clover download page. I figured I don't need it all that much. I abandoned the Windows app I was using for a tabbed explorer because it didn't load things as quickly as the regular explorer. I've gotten pretty used to the separate explorer windows.

I suspect a lot of users simply do not realise that they can right click the Explorer icon to access previous 'tabs'. Proper tabs would be the obvious and familiar way forward but I wouldn't bet on it happening.

I still rely on the old Explorer++ if I'm working on something where I know I'll need tabs. It's not pretty or modern but it works. I agree that we shouldn't hold our breaths for MS to ever make tabbed explorer native to the OS. For the life of me, I never have understood their reasoning behind not giving it a long time ago. One young MIT intern could whip it out in an afternoon. I wonder what is the reason for MS's resistance to it.

I use the MS Store app Files, love the tabs option
