Unable to understand compatibility issue of HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 with Windows 11 or not

HI,

Recently I upgraded my computer from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

I have HP OfficeJet Pro 8600.

At printer panel, I see, already the printer is connected with the WiFi. However, using Network Setup Wizard, I connected the printer 3 times.
Every time the printer got connected successfully with the WiFi. While adding the printer at Add Printer in Windows 11, it's unable to find the printer.

I checked multiple times. The computer and the printer are connected with the same WiFi.
The printer is working fine with cable connection between the printer and the computer.

I am unable to understand, it’s compatibility issue of printer with Windows 11.
Moreover, pls let me know, what I need to check for resolving the issue.

Let's do it the old school way that works from Windows XP and up. Instead of relying on some software to detect the printer, connect it manually using its IP address. Since the printer is connected to your Wi-Fi, it must have an IP address (network address) similar to 192.168.xx.xx To see which one it is you can print the Network Configuration Page using your printer's controls. Refer to the manual for details. On that page you are looking for TCP/IP and 192.168.xx.xx address. Now go to traditional Control Panel (search for that and click to open). If you see groups of settings, click on the list at top right and select Show Large Icons to see individual controls. Open the Devices and Printers. Click on Add a printer. Then click on the blue text "The printer that I want is not listed" to open a new window. Select "Add a printer using TCP/IP address or hostname" and click Next. In "Hostname or IP address" type your printer's IP address and click Next. You should see a list of manufacturers, find HP or Hewlett Packard (there may be more than one entries) and select your printer's model. If you don't find it, try the next HP or Hewlett Packard entry. If there is nowhere, try installing the printer software before adding the printer. Print a test page to verify the printer is installed correctly.

I have an 8600 which works perfectly with 10 and 11. Turn it off and run the software @Winuser mentioned in post #4. The installation process will tell you when to turn the printer back on.

I've got the same issue. Tried the work arounds... all that I know of with the exception of using safe mode start up and dual booting to an older version of Windows. Windows 11 is running on a surface pro 11, fresh windows install won't take the HP Print Assist software installation. It fails due to that Plug and Play error.
I've read that Plug and Play is now an integrated service which doesn't show up on the services list. That HP Print Assist software needs to see it in order to install completely.
Likewise, using the HP Smart app gets you only so far. You can't get into the Advanced Settings screen. I get a different error "

10.0.0.14 uses an unsupported protocol.

I've tried so many ways to hack into this including finding a way to open the old Explorer and skirt past the security warnings. I've turned off the firewall and VPN, etc.

So installing from the IP address doesn't work.
Here to find the answer if you're willing to dig.

I will let you know if suggestions work or not.

just as an add on.
i always use static addressing for my WiFi printer (Brother MFC-L3710CW)
this addressing i get from the router, which i reserve, then add this addressing into the printer via its own network settings
then set the printer up within Windows with the same connection addressing, its the old fashioned way.

this has worked thus far for about 5 to 6 computers attached to my network and all the mobile phones that also use the printer when needed.

Disable the static ip address you've given it and restart the router and printer. Check what the ip address is for the printer. Mine is 192.168.1.103.

10.0.0.14 doesn't seem to be correct to me but maybe I'm missing something.

One way to do this is to login to the router and see if you can see both the computer and the printer as connected devices.

10.0.0.14 can be correct because those are non-routable private IP space:
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (Class A),
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (Class B),
and 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (Class C)

It all depends on what the other IP's are for the LAN side of the router.

One way to do this is to login to the router and see if you can see both the computer and the printer as connected devices.

10.0.0.14 can be correct because those are non-routable private IP space:
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (Class A),
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (Class B),
and 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (Class C)

It all depends on what the other IP's are for the LAN side of the router.

The protocol is another issue which can happen on any IP address which is not related to the IP address itself. It has to do with the version(s) of SSL and TLS meaning either the printer is too old or the browser is too new. One might need to enable the deprecated protocols in the browser like SSLv2 or SSLv3 instead of TLS only.

If it has a static IP address and connected to the router, it will show up in the connected Clients list, ofcourse there would be routers that might only show DHCP clients only. Otherwise, how will it even be connected to the router unless the printer is not connected to the router and directly to the computer which is possible with HP Direct Print, also known as HP Wi-Fi Direct, which is a feature that allows users to print from a mobile device or computer to an HP printer without connecting to a network or the internet. See below, manual means static IP and DHCP means Dynamic IP.

One can always arp -a from the command prompt or ping the printer's IP address since if the printer does not show up in either case, that means the printer is not connected or seen.

The other thing might be the firmware on the printer needs to be updated as from this post:

"I have an Officejet Pro 8620. Not sure if that applies here. It had a very old firmware. Whenever I tried to update firmware / enable web services I got an error message. Although the device was connected to the internet.

I solved the problem by downloading a slightly newer firmware from the HP website. Only when I've chosen Win 10 or some older versions I saw a firmware file ready Ato download. For Win 11 it did not show up. After using that file to update the firmware I could now enable web services and then update to the latest firmware version. Took me some hours to figure that out."

So in the case of the OfficeJet 8600, first visit https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-officejet-pro-8600-e-all-in-one-printer-series-n911/4322914

1) download the latest firmware:
HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911 Firmware Update v2011A - OJP8600_N911a_2011A.exe
2) install firmware
2) download and install the latest HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus/Premium e-All-in-One Printer series - N911a-n Full Feature Software and Driver v28.1.1312_1 - Full_Webpack-1312_1-OJ8600_Full_Webpack.exe
and then see if it makes a difference or not.

Also, it would help if you provided the IP address on the printer:
On Touchscreen, select SETUP
Then select NETWORK
Then select VIEW NETWORK SUMMARY
Then select VIEW WIRELESS

and also the computer so we know it's on the same network.

It's ok that you're thinking I don't know what I've done to change the IP address of my printer. It is indeed 10.0.0.14 as that is the number I assigned it. My network is set up to be different than what the default router settings provide on purpose. Here's the response with a simple ipconfig at the command prompt:

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.1

This printer works with another Windows Surface Pro 6. This machine ran an older version of Windows when I first got it for which the Print Assist software installed due to the fact that Plug and Play used to be a separate service. Once I updated to Windows 11 on this older machine I had to remind the printer how to work with a little coaxing. It's fine. The software was already installed.

But on a fresh install of Windows 11 for which the Plug and Play service is now integrated and does not show up on the Services list, the Print Assist software doesn't install. That's the error that shows up at the end of attempted HP software wizard installation I know you're familiar with because it is the one you mention above.

I currently have a Windows support case open at Microsoft that was escalated to the engineers. It took 2 hours for the initial tech support person to catch up to all this... everything I just outlined... She didn't accept a single piece of information provided (much like what happened above) and went about attempting to install the software herself in a remote session. She reached the same conclusion and escalated the call.

I did state that I already downloaded the HP software in my first message " Windows 11 is running on a surface pro 11, fresh windows install won't take the HP Print Assist software installation."

It does not work on a FRESH WINDOWS 11 Operating system.
There's nothing wrong with the IP addresses, computers and printers seeing one another, or permissions as they are all on the same network.

I'll update with whatever Microsoft adds to the conversation.

@vennarie - You still never said if you updated the firmware on the printer to the latest or not which may be the reason behind it due to the newer protocols used by Windows 11 where the older versions of protocols are no longer supported so it might fix the problem if it is indeed the firmware. What version is the firmware on your printer? Your IP configuration looks fine but you are one of the two persons in the thread with a problem.
