What the heck is "Windows SV Version"?

I just ran Windows Update on my Surface Go 2, running Win 11, and the following update was presented:



Never heard of "Windows SV" and Google was of no help.

What is it?

Thanks, Nigel, but this thing is still mysterious. Searching revealed that that KB number has been used several times, and I got it yesterday on both W11 desktops and my older W10 desktop. Why are we getting it (again)?

Usually the abbreviation SV means Sun Valley, the codename of Windows 11.

As for the KB mentioned, I got a new Notebook on Oct. 15 with Win10 Pro, after setup then updates that KB installed for Win10 Version 21H1. After all was finished and rechecked got Win11 21H2, all in a space of about 3 hours. Now 21H2 is rolling out for Win10, have gotten it on a few machines, working good but can't get Win11 on them.

The SV may not mean Sun Valley (W11 code name) in this case, since Berton and I are reporting receiving this "Windows SV Version 21H2" update on Win10 machines, and the MS article Barman linked for us lists a lot of Win10 versions and only the one Win11 (original).

No, MS seem to be using the abbreviation CO internally for distinguishing W11 from W10, CO21H2 vs 21H2. Cobalt is another name for Sun Valley. You'll see a CO21H2 key in the registry of any W10 PC that shows 'this PC doesn't currently meet the all the system requirements for Windows 11' (or 'can run 11') in Windows update.

Interesting. There's no such key in the registry of this non-11-compliant that I ran the testers on before upgrading from W10 to W11 two+ moths ago, and it never has shown the "doesn't currently ...," thing in WU, which kinda makes sense, since it's running W11 very well, indeed.

Those keys in TargetVersionUpgradeExperienceIndicators only exist on a W10 install. They are compatibility check results for the potential upgrade of its current W10 to a newer version. My W10 machine in the example above started life with W10 2004 and has them for 21H1, 21H2 and CO21H2. On upgrading to W11 these keys would all get deleted as they are no longer relevant to a W11 install.

Hmmm...I'm on 22000.346, not the original release, but I'm seeing this update available.

It's tiny, fast, and doesn't require a restart. Looks to me from the linked MS info it does little to or for installations that keep plenty of room on their System drive for WU to use.

Unfortunately, there are lots of mainstream users who have a single disk and a single partition, and they put all their programs and music and pictures on that single drive. Over time, that causes a big problem for WU. This update is designed to help. At least that's what I get from reading the doc.

True. You can uninstall it if you like, but at 1.03MB it's hardly worth it - plus it will get reinstalled (under the same KB number) next time MS updates it.
