I am rather dead set against this, as I believe it would harm 3rd party tools like Macrium Reflect, Easeus etc. I just do not trust MS to come up with a robust offering and react quickly enough to bugs.

To me, one of the key reasons for a good 3rd party backup is to protect against Windows issues, and it seems to me to be a circular argument to use a windows feature to protect against Windows issues.

As long as the hourly updated 'everything' backup (OS + apps + user data) is provided by working in the background (i.e. not requiring a launch of the backup software) the prime considerations are quality, reliability, etc., and not provenance (MS or 3rd party)

However, an argument can be made that MS as the OS provider is in a better position than 3rd parties to provide the 'everything' backup software that updates hourly in the background. True, MS did not do that in the past, but neither did anyone else.

So, open race for everyone then, for the 'everything' backup of W12 machines that updates hourly in the background, may the best man win the race (y)

Edit: I have nothing either against MS doing it in OneDrive and MR doing it on an external SSD, on the contrary, I'd even say hooray hooray (y)(y)

My suggestion is about something much more advanced, a brief description is in post #84

How is your backup and restore lesson coming along, BTW? If the Macrium Reflect based lesson is too much, then you could consider a lesson based on OneDrive or File History, that would fit in a 1.5 hour lesson. The OS breaks less often than solar eclipses, anyway, it would make sense to get help in such infrequent cases.

Sure, I am having fun myself, what I suggested is something quite ancient, it is the "Holy Grail" of backup, i.e. real time backup of everything (OS, apps, user data)

I put "Holy Grail" in quotation marks because there are conceptual problems with the notion, too long to discuss.

Please improve File Explorer -- It gets worse from release to release and please let it handle long path and file names ( > 266 chars). You could also build in some decent file transfer option as per file zilla over sftp. find this program always picks up remote shares even when file explorer doesn't show other computers.

Also please install openssh server as standard instead of "add optional feature"

Cheers

Same as using an Anti Virus prgram on an infected computer to "repair the machine after the OS has been compromised". Would you deliberately fly in a defective plane and then attempt to repair it while it's in the air. !!!

Windows has never reasonably done decent backups itself -- even in Windows early days things like Norton Ghost (anybody remember that) were excellent and could always do "bare Metal" restores too.

I think the comparison is faulty. Windows Defender is checking up on Windows itself and it is one of the best.

It was one of the worst and became one of the best. It can go down too, everything goes up and down in cycles, Windows, backup, life itself ...

Hi there
I gave the wrong impression -- WD is of course great -- and of course an OS should protect itself -- however IF the OS got contaminated then I wouldn't run any "decontamination" program 3rd party or otherwise on the faulty OS itself. I'd do a "Clean" restore. That's what I really meant. Detecting a PUP, malware or a possible virus and preventing it from installing is different from cleansing an already infected machine.

I've had WD and nothing else ever since early W10 days and been more than happy with it.

Sometimes difficult to conver exact meanings remotely over the Internet.

Sure @jimbo45 and like Windows Defender, one day MS can make its own Backup and Restore from one of the worst to one of the best too (y)

Like I wrote in the above in post #84 the quality of these utilities don't depend on provenance, MS or third party can do equally well, it is an open race.

And I added in post #92 that the winners of the open race will change over time, like everything else always change, too.

Maybe even the OS itself. !! who knows -- at home I'm probably on Linux 90% of the time with Windows 11 running as Virtual machines. Even photoshop runs fine in a Virtual environment on my hardware as I've got enough hardware power to pass thru a load of hardware to the VM so it can run at or very near "Natiive speed".

Graphics and Disk I/O are the areas of most interest. On a Dual physical processor system ( 2 physically separate processors - not talking about multi cores here) and assigning one of the physical CPU's to the VM also is a winner. Virtual network adapters also shouldn't slow down network traffic on a smallish home LAN.

Yeah, sure, nothing is immune from going up and down, it's no different for Windows OS and other OSs for that matter.

Something else, maybe you could post Linux tutorials in the WSL subforum, it could entice people like me to learn Linux.

If you post Linux anecdotes, as you often do, the benefits for the reader are fragmented. For example, I myself dabbled in LPS and a few other special purpose Linux-based developments, but nothing durable came out of it.

If you offer a cohesive package, that's a whole other ball game (y)

Yep.. we had high hopes... but nay.

Mark Shuttleworth sold out with this WSL stuff - he is not a Steve Jobs, unfortunately (saying this as a fellow countryman and rather fond of the guy)
