What would you like to see in Windows 12?


Please, no more upgrades and or weekly updates. I have one Win 11 machine, and 3 Win 10's that are not upgradeable to 11. Gees, this is getting ridiculous. What do we call this "Microsoft Software" engineers job security??? Maybe at least keep 10 for the next 10 years.

  • Completely rebuilt Fluent Design and apps

    • Clipchamp (tried it, not bad actually, but still 'bloatware' for many users) (Should be integrated into the Photos app instead of the current trashy 'Video editor' thrown in there, if at all installed by default)
  • '3D Objects' folder in all user folders removed by default, added back if you actually use 3D Viewer/3D Builder
  • Less adverts
  • Make it possible to hide desktop.ini files even if show system files is on (annoying on a desktop)
  • Not important for most users, but better options for OLED screens (will definitely be useful for me, I'll finally be able to ditch the MyASUS app)
  • Win8-like tablet mode, ONLY FOR TOUCHSCREEN DEVICES, NOT ENABLED BY DEFAULT ON ANY DEVICE (hopefully won't cause controversy)
  • Feature to block camera/microphone
  • View all network activity easily (already suggested by the OP)

As much as I would like these features I see a "time machine" feature unlikely, MS would probably try to use Onedrive as their backup service.. I could see a 1TB+PC Backups plan from them. Lol

Edit: I just remembered backup and restore exists. I bet it still works but that thing desperately needs some updates

Great idea. Well, I normally hate MS lazily hiding old but useful features, but I'm kind of relieved that Backup + Restore is still a thing. I will be happy if they just keep it as is or update it, but not if they completely remove it and beg you to use OneDrive.

Being a Joe Blow user I am not sure what else Microsoft could add to the new system I am happy with 10 and 11 as I was when 7 was a round.

The Windows Backup and Restore feature is a deprecated feature, and has not maintained for years. It is unreliable which defeats point of image backups. MS themselves (Windows 10 features we're no longer developing - Windows Deployment) recommend using 3rd party tools.

Stick to a quality tools like Macrium Reflect, Easesus Todo, Aomei Backupper (all have free versions), or similar tools.

I mean, I don't really use it any more, but having a built-in backup feature that's NOT totally linked to OneDrive is a great thing to have. I do use Macrium a lot more.

Windows 10 was released in 2015, Microsoft work on a ten year cycle for operating systems. [5 years with full support, including feature updates, followed by 5 years of extended support, limited to bug fixes and similar updates

They have stated that windows 10 will be supported until at least 2025 which is in line with their standard practice

I don't have the brightness control on my desktop. I have to use the NVIDIA Control Panel. On my wife's laptop I can access the brightness control by right clicking on the desktop and selecting the display settings.

You guys do know that in the 90s and 2000s MS released a new standalone version of windows every 2-3 years. 95, 98, Me, XP, Vista, they were all released in a span of a bit over 10 years. And while they did slow down a bit after, especially with Win10, it sill shouldn't be too surprising.

Anyways, as for what I want from 12, not too much honestly. OSes achieve most of what people want from them, and I don't think I've missed any feature. The main thing for me though is appearance. Even though I kinda liked the metro design of Win8, it definitely looked better on phones (diehard Windows Phone fan, still using one today), than it did on PCs. Design seriously took a nosedive after Vista and 7. So the best thing for me would be a complete UI redesign. And I'm talking everything. Yes we're promised a new and improved UI every Win release, but it's always lackluster and doesn't cover even a half of Windows, let alone 100%. Acrylic was the only thing that kinda looked nice from Win10, and it was barely used at all. Now they're killing it and replacing with Mica which looks straight up plain worse in every way. So I don't have any hopes for a good UI redesign happening, it's always gonna be up to 3rd party themes to fix that.

I would have ended my post there, but I've read a comment saying remove Cortana. I seriously don't understand it one bit. Cortana was one of he only true innovations in Windows in the past decade, and the initial idea was amazing. If you think of the future of computing, or look at any sci-fi movie, you will see voice commands in natural language and AI that serves us. That is the future, and I think it will happen at some point. Now of course, Microsoft in all of their infinite wisdom, instead of improving and building it, took a big diarrhea dump on it and now it's practically dead. What a shame.

Yea, Microsoft even announced that the final OS name would just be "Windows", which I found rather intelligent !

The economic model of how the firm monopolize evolution has finally been impacted by Android (what the too independent and various Linux couldn't attempt), with showing that whatever the device you are using, the latest OS is always updated no matter if some particular apps only work depending on specs. Behavior, appearance and privacy are more and more customizable.
So Bill possibly backtracked just for commercial purpose, but I don't think present and future generation of users will appreciate this kind of evolution very long.
