Hi folks
curious as to why tthe Ms Media creation tool creates install media for build 225xxx builds which is surely on the insider preview chain of releases. I thought the basic currently running public build was 22000 build which for the typical user either installing W11 for the first time or upgrading from W7/W8/W8.1/W10 would seem more appropriate and less likely to contain defects associated with "Insider releases". It's obviously still getting updates etc so it's not EOL yet.

Cheers

Jimbo, I believe whatever version you get depends on which media creation tool you download and the option you select. I am on release and used this one Download Windows 11
I always uncheck the box "Use recommended options for this PC".
The next option allows the tool to burn either directly to a usb drive or download an iso file to your computer.
I've used both options but most times I choose the iso option and then use Rufus to create my installation usb.
Either way, the resulting media is always whatever the release version is at the time and is always a multi-iso that can be used for Home or Pro.

That was probably it --- I certainly preferred to get back to the most "Bog standard" version 22000 rather than the 225 builds - but if that's now the basic "public build" then that's it. It gets confusing though when insider and public builds start with the same primary release number 225xxx. Even if the insider build is 95% similar to the public release build it would make more sense to separate the channels but when was Ms ever logical.

cheers

22000 was the original public release of Windows 11 21H2 on 4th October 2021 and reaches End of Servicing on 10th October 2023. The current public release is build 22621, released on 20th September 2022. The MCT currently makes install media for build 22621.1702.

The Insider Beta Channel is on build 22621/22631 (22631 is the same as 22621, but with an Enablement Package installed to turn on new features) but the minor build numbers (22621.xxxx/22631.xxxx) are always several steps ahead of the the public General Availability Channel. More on Insider build numbers here:

Initial build series per channel:

  • Canary Channel: 25000 series.
  • Dev Channel: 23000 series.
  • Beta Channel: 22000 series.
  • Release Preview: Released versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Beta as native boot vhdx.

My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 4GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus the Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds as a native boot .vhdx.

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package. Also running Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds as a native boot .vhdx.
