UPDATE 7/12:

(No blog post)

New Widget: Focus Session

We are beginning to roll out a new Focus Session widget as part of a Clock app update (version 11.2305.6.0 and higher) via the Microsoft Store to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels. With this new widget, you will be able to quickly start and stop focus sessions on your device.

The new Focus Session widget.

The new Focus Session widget.

[We are beginning to roll this out, so the experience isn’t available to all Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels just yet as we plan to monitor feedback and see how it lands before pushing it out to everyone.]

I wonder if Microsoft shouldn't have pulled the trigger on this Canary thing until there was an actual need for it, which there definitely hasn't been to date. Maybe it should have coincided, or narrowly preceded, the Win12 stuff, assuming there's even going to be one. If there isn't, this channel is beyond puzzling.

These are 23H2 builds, Dev is 22H2. I assumed Dev was the leading to the final 23H2 release later this year. It makes no sense.

Yeah, 23481 still reads as 22H2, which is nonsensical at this point. How could it not be leading to 23H2? I guess the implication is that Canary is going to push to Dev in the near future, but we know for sure that 23H2 isn't going to be 25xxx, so that's problematical too. I think the 23H2 in Canary must just be a placeholder at this point so as not to tip their hand about anything happening next year. At some point, it'll change to 24H2 or whatever, and Dev to 23H2.

Canary is just a platform for MS to test ideas and never leads to any version directly - it is just a high tech scratch-pad really.

Back in the day, items got added to Fast Ring (became Dev), and eventually the Fast Ring version was released on Slow Ring (became Beta). As you got nearer Release date they all converged.

Now you have to think of it as:

Canary - early sight of new ideas that may never see the light of day in release (This is rather like the old Skipahead).
Dev early sight of features that will probably make it to release but no guarantee.
Beta early sight of features that are likely to make it to release but no guarantee.

What is irritating is when new features hit Beta before Dev!

Back in the day, it was simple - Fast Ring users saw all new features first and higher risk of being buggy.
Slow Ring users saw the SAME features a bit later when initial bugs had be ironed out.

In general, all features in Slow Ring got into release except notably the infamous Sets feature which was a heap of camel dung apart from the long awaited File Explorer with tabs (which we have now as an indendent feature).

So users generally opted for either the Fast Ring if a bit cavalier, or the Slow Ring if more conservative.

Now Insiders have to run both Beta and Dev if they want to see all features which is more effort and confusing.

Personally, I am not really interested in testing features unless they have a decent chance of making it to release.

Frankly, the Insider Programme is a mess now.

Lately I am spending more time on my mac because every beta release there is always something new and forward, Windows insider channels since 11 are just a crock of sh!t@

As @cereberus said above is just a confusing mess. The latest canary build contains what? A focus widget....good grief! and even then if you aren’t one of the anointed in the A band you can spend 45 odd mins updating for absolutely no reason whatsoever
