Yahoo Email Account taken over...

My friends Yahoo Email Account has been taken over by his ex-girlfriend. She has changed the password and also changed the 2FA mobile phone number to her mobile phone number.
Does anyone know of any means available to him to recover his email account?

@suparoo I would consider him approaching her, unless there is a restraint. I would advise him to tell her that he has proof of owning that account and that he will contact the local police (or as you are also in Australia, it’s actually a Federal Police matter I would guess) and to tell her that he is going to press charges.
If she has any kind of life, professional or whatever, this wont reflect well on her.

In fact, I am not sure I would even approach her and get him to first consult the police. But to have a calm and convincing reason to give them as to why this is a problem and not to come across as a spiteful ex. He would need to make it the least poor me as he can.

The Australian police and govt. don’t look well upon hackers, which is what she technically did.

If he doesnt want to approach her, and she is obviously reading his email, I would get him to email his own address so as she reads it with “ATTENTION: ‘SPITEFUL EX GIRLFRIEND NAME HERE’” as the subject. CC her email address.

Get him to detail what he wants in the email (without nasty comments or threats etc) and hope she replies with something incriminating, like: “You’re not getting your email address back”

I wish him luck. Usually if 2fa is enabled then companies won’t help - usually as they cannot reset this security feature.
The only option is if he’s currently signed in to the account then he may be able to change the information back. It does beg the question if 2fa was already enabled then how did the ex get the code as she’d need that to access the account & change the information.
