Firefox download behavior - PDFs downloading not just opening

This behavior started some time ago - 3 or more major FF updates ago.

When on a website - like a credit card site - and I want to open a statement to review it - rather than just opening the statement in my PDF reader - FF is also downloading it to the folder set in my settings. I don't want to automatically download these PDFs, just view them.
The above is an example - this behavior happens on any website with any PDF document, article, etc.

In FF settings > Downloads > I have chosen "Always ask where to save files"
In Applications > PDF > I have "Use Nitro Reader"
In What to do with other files > I have "Always ask whether to open of save"

I don't see any other standard settings that would address this.

What do I need to do to get FF to behave as I want?

In FF Settings, you need to "choose" Open in Firefox, for "viewing" PDF files.

When opened for viewing in FF, the PDF will still allow you to download if desired.

In Windows... type: Defaults in the Taskbar Search box.
When that windows opens, scroll down and click on: Choose defaults by file type.
Scroll down through that list till you get to... .pdf
Set the .pdf file type to be opened with whatever PDF reader you have.

No. Still doing it. Not as much, mind you, but still doing it.

It seems you have a conflict.
Double check that PDFs are doing what you want, in Windows Defaults settings and in Firefox Options.

Go into about:config and set browser.shell.checkDefaultBrowser to False
Then... make sure Firefox is set to be your default browser (in Firefox and in Windows settings).

Hey Ghot.
I have checked every setting many times. Everything seems to be as it is supposed to be. I even did the thing where you turn the setting off, close the program, and then turn it back on again.

I'm hoping to avoid the inevitable: resetting FF.

If all the settings are OK... then it might be easiest to export your bookmarks then uninstall and do a clean install of Firefox.

You can test in Firefox > Help > Troubleshoot Mode (Safe Mode)

See if the problem still exists.
