I was looking through some old photos and came across this one, taken on an old phone camera in a waterproof bag back when I was diving, I think about 2009 in the Red Sea, quality is poor but the experience at the time was far from poor. Right place, right time

Hatching chickadees in the first hour of their lives

I made a nestbox with a slanted roof and glued a mirror on the underside of the slanted roof. I mounted the nestbox in an upper corner of a window so that I can look up from inside of the house and see a top view of the nest, that's how I took the photo. I obscured all sides so as not to disturb the nesting birds and witnessed the miracle of egg-to-flying-bird-in-1-month

Thanks, when I was in the hobby, I could handfeed these birds :) I no longer put out nestboxes nor a birdfeeder, but I still put out pet fur that I get for free from a pet groomer. The male attracts the female to a nestsite, but the female builds the nest, she makes a nestcup from mosses, and lines the nestcup with something soft, like pet fur. The male is a very good father, though, getting tons and tons of little green caterpillars to feed the female and the female then feeds the baby birds. Outside the nestbox, the male is dominant, but inside the nestbox, the female is dominant. Oh well, I could go on forever :)
