I've been trying to disable Windows Defender and had no success in doing so. I tried to disable it in the registry (of course I turned off tamper protection first before doing anything) and it just keeps turning right back on after the system restarts. I did even try Group policy to turn it off but after restart, the police reverts to 'no configured'. Last method I tried was simply turning it off within the windows security app and installed 3rd party antivirus but MsMpEng.exe is still running at the same time and taking as much as 200mb memory. I'm sick of this. Are they forcing us to use win defender now?

You can use Autoruns v 13.98 to turn it off. But it may have unintended effects on Windows 11.
Just uncheck the boxes as shown... then go into Services and disable the Windows Defender and Microsoft Defender Services.

Set the "Options" like this...

IF... you are going to use a 3rd party AV/firewall... just install that and leave Defender alone. ^^

That's older version. Even newer 1.2.5 does not remove win defender anymore. Even disabling defender components isn't working for me too. It just ended up messing up the windows security app and MsMpEng.exe still running

@FreeBooter

Why would you want to -- WD is by far the best system for Domestic computers -- It's based on the almost military strength of Ms's security on its hugely successful (and increasingly profitable) Azure Cloud computing service.

Things like Norton etc just bog down PC's and are so last century.

A better security for a lot if they are still allowed in a load of jursidictions with current "millenials and Gen-Z", and woke politicians who might say a whole load of "cobblers" against the use of these things is to use these devices !!.

They work 100% of the time against rodents !!!. I don't care what the environmentals say --I don't need those nasty mice anywhere near my "Gaff". (And Iceland is one of the most "Environmentally conscious and green countries on the planet -- but there are limits below which citizens won't go !!! ==Mice in homes is one of them!!!!!).).

Windows Defender is entwined into the OS. I wouldn't dare to disable it. Rather I would use a third software antivirus.

Defender is no longer disabled, even when 3rd party is installed, it is "quietly" running in the background in order to kick in, if 3rd party AV gets disabled by malware, but it can cause various issues like the intense CPU/HDD usage, memory leaks or even BSOD.
