Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware

Updated to Windows 11 Home Version 22H2 (10.0.22623.746) today.

I recently installed Windows 11 22H2 on an old HP laptop. The disk was off, so I put a new SSD and did a clean installation. Setup detected a Windows Home key in BIOS and automatically installed Windows 11 Home. I couldn't bypass the network connection requirement by the old method of ending the appropriate task in Task Manager. So I pressed Shift+F10 to open a command prompt and executed this code:OOBE\BYPASSNRO. The computer restarted once but this time when asked for a network connection there was the "I don't have an internet connection" option! So I clicked on that and could create a local account instead.

Thanks for sharing that. I was not aware that this worked for the Home edition of Windows. I had assumed that this only worked on Pro, but I'm glad I was wrong on that.

Yes,it works for all editions. It is still there in the latest Dev Build 25217.1010 which I've just a clean installed in a VM, using that so I could install with a local account only.

I gotta say that I am at least happy that Microsoft allows these little workarounds for things like installing on unsupported hardware and creation of local accounts for us enthusiasts willing to take the responsibility of running in an unsanctioned manner. They just don't go around advertising this.

Yes, thankfully Microsoft is much better than Apple that block all older Macs from newer Mac OS versions.

Regarding my last Windows 11 installation on an unsupported HP laptop, the version was indeed Windows 11 Home, I confirmed it with the System Properties. Just wanted to confirm that the trick to bypass network connection requirement works in Home version as well. See my previous post for details.

The thing I've been noticing is that with every new build release I had to DL the newest ISO and with Rufus use the bypass to create a USB then double click the setup file to update to the latest

Yes, unsupported computers aren't offered the upgrade to the next build via Windows Update. The only way to upgrade to the latest version is to manually download the ISO and bypass compatibility check, see older posts. Make sure you match the language to be able to keep both your apps and files. If for example you have English US installed and try to upgrade with English International (UK), you will be prompted to keep only your data (not apps) or do a clean installation! Always download the appropriate ISO.

Im "compatible" ( tested by MS) , still no upgrade offered !

The same problem on my other desktop-PC , Im very sure its a bug , still not fixed...........!

The last time i installed win11 I just clicked the thing that says something about about joining a domain. That is how I got a local account.

Haven't seen it. It doesn't appear in Windows 11 Home since it cannot join a domain. I have not yet done a clean installation of Windows 11 Pro 22H2 to see if this option appears... Thanks for sharing.

I know exactly what you are referring to. That option is only available on Pro or higher editions of Windows. For clarification, here is what SIW2 is referencing (at least this is what it sounds like SIW2 is referring to):

During a clean install of Windows if an Internet connection is available, you can do the following to create a local account:

1) During installation, proceed up to the point where you are given a choice to "Set up for personal use" or "Set up for work or school".

2) Select "Set up for work or school" and click on "Next".

3) On the next screen, select "Sign-in options", then "Domain join instead". Don't worry, we are not joining a domain!

4) On the next screen, supply the local user name that you want to create and then continue through setup as normal.

5) When done with Windows installation, you will have a local account.

Again, note that this only works on Pro+ and requires an Internet connection.

If you DO NOT have an internet connection, use this method instead:

1) When you reach the screen where Windows wants to connect you to a network to create a local user account, press SHIFT + F10 to open a command prompt.

2)Run the command "OOBE\BypassNRO". The system will reboot.

3) After rebooting, you will start back up at the screen asking you to select the correct keyboard layout. When you get back to the "Let's connect you to a network" screen, you will have an option to select "I don't have internet". Choose that option.

4) On the next screen, select "Continue with limited setup". Enter your local user account name, and then continue with setup as usual.

I couldn't persuade it to go any further without a connection, maybe there is a way round that which I didn't spot at the time. After turning internet on it offered to set up ms account or something to do with a domain.

hsestedt outlined the steps above, which I couldn't remember precisely. I just try clciking whatever is there and/or using back buttons if they appear and see what happens.

So that's how you get the "I don't have an internet connection" option.

Quicker and easier to do the school > domain thing. Maybe it only works with Pro and up.

Rumors have it that network connection requirement is for both Home and Pro in 22H2, so you have to use a workaround to create a local account in either case. I cannot confirm that for Pro as I have not yet done a clean installation of Windows 11 Pro 22H2. As soon as I do, I will let you know.

It might only be an option in Pro. After clickng the domain option it asks to enter a computer name and then you have a local account.

What other events do you get? Try cleaning them up and the 1108 should go away

If I have a successful upgrade I would not care about the event log. Just ignore it.

Only id=1108 , errors ...........they come back after each reboot , cleaning does not help ............
Never seen this before , neither in 22H1 !
Lots of people reported this id=1108 , no solution still................
