Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware


I agree, at least i know it downloaded 22H2 .... now got to get updates !! Not sure what i will do with it ! I have 4 others with 22H2 that all but 1 is non-supported ! And 1 is my VM that i use for only Malware Removal & testing new programs for MW Removal

I should make it clear that i started with Vista the upgraded to W 10 then on to Windows 11 22H2 ! It is so slow because it's old !! Time to retire that old rig ........ RIP !!!!

Your CPU is newer than mine but also slower. Probably the disk had gotten a lot slower due to aging. If you replace the disk with an SSD you will think you bought a new laptop!
Don't ever talk about Linux again on a Windows forum. It is worse than sacrilege!

Linux is good for most purposes except gaming, but it's got a learning curve, and I have never been sure of what I have been doing 🙄

Apparently this is no longer the case. Microsoft developers now love Linux so much that they developed WSL and are rapidly porting the majority of their 'freeware' to run natively on Linux distributions, including Edge, VSCode and .NET

I don't care what they do. I don't like Linux. Tested it many times, had difficulty with drivers and some applications, bad experience. No thanks. I rather install Windows 98 or XP on an old computer than a modern version of Linux. By the way any Pentium 4 CPU with 1GB RAM or better can run Windows 7 32-bit very good, so I would rather install that.

Just because you've had a bad experience does not mean that others do. Linux is just a tool like Windows. Good thing that we can have best of both worlds, and even straight on our Windows desktops if we so prefer.

Is it good as long as you run only Steam games and nothing goes wrong. If you try to run a modern Windows game using Wine you might get in trouble. Even if you manage to run it don't expect the same performance as running it on Windows 10 or 11. Same is true for Mac OS and Wine for Mac.

Don't use Wine, use Steam Proton. Games run 80-120% of the performance on Windows, depending on titles. The ones that don't run are games with all kinds of low-level anti-cheat tech embedded that is a bad experience on Windows too. I would not touch those games even with a long stick. Only filled with problems that eats away a good gaming experience.
Generally, in gaming, we don't need 300fps+. 60-120 FPS is fine, and if we have decent hardware to back this up, it does not matter if you run the game on Windows or Linux. Important is stable refresh rates not max refresh rates. Linux gives mostly a much more stable experience that Windows. I hate playing games that jump from 30-300fps...the experience is a choppy game, where your timing is always off.

I don't know if anything changed, but Wine uses DirectX 9.0c runtime, possibly some .DLL files of DirectX 11 as well. It cannot do full DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, so games using these can have better graphics and/or performance on Windows. Some even require DirectX 11 or 12 to run, no matter the performance.

Forget Wine, it's kinda obsolete when it comes to gaming graphics. Proton uses DXVK translation layer to take full advantage of the DX12 API. And it's fast. In some cases you can use Vulkan directly too. Not all games are DX only titles. Some even use the obsolete OpenGL still, which is good enough in most cases. ...unless you want the latest bling which brings nothing to the actual game content, it only looks better at better performance.

Yes, this is a very good starting point if coming from Windows. Works like a charm on older and slower hardware and both looks and behaves mostly like any Windows machine, except with less choppy experience.

And much less application compatibility which is what I hate most.
