Solved New PC - Win 11

My friend just purchased an HP all in one. She currently uses a Dell 2305 win 7. Will I be able to transfer her favorites folder (Edge) to her new pc - I have a jump drive to enable the process. Just wondering if going from win7 to win11 will her favorites be moveable. Thanks

If Edge is up to date on her W7, the folder should be treated exactly the same way on her new HP as it was treated on her W7 Dell. Just maybe check for Updates in Edge on the W7 first. Good luck.

Those favorites folders are just collections of shortcuts.

Edge stopped updating win7 a while ago - I am just going to copy her fave folder to the jump drive and plug it into the new pc and hope it makes the trip. Thanks.

I think the best way is to copy the favs folder to the jump, then delete the favs folder from the HP, and while it's still in the Rec Bin ( so you can restore it if anything goes wrong), copy the favs folder (not just the contents) from the jump to the Edge folder.

open Edge-3 dots-favorites-3 dots-export favorites browse to where to save file.
In new installation use same procedure except choose import

I think, (though I don't know), the only diff between the export-import procedure and the folder replacement procedure is that with the former, you'll still have all of the original favs stuff that came with Edge on the new machine, with your favs added to it, while with the folder replacement, you'll only have what you transferred from the Dell.

The only items that can be exported are those that you see in favorites. It does not recreate anything that was previously deleted, such as the "original" favorites.

But isn't it the case that a new installation of Edge comes with a stock of favs and maybe some folders, and if you import the favs from the old comp, you'll just ADD the Dell favs to the HP OEM favs, without replacing anything?

Thank you to all. I will let you know how I make out. The old Dell is 11 years old and still chugging along. She has kept it this long because new pc's are such a pain to deal with if you are a novice -- and she is.

HI ALL - yesterday we saved the favs on Edge to a jump drive. Today, we want to import them from the jump drive into Edge on new pc. A dialogue keeps coming up, "import bookmarks from Chrome into Edge" -- she didn't use chrome - only Edge so a little confusion -- any help?

Cancel -- we got it "figgured" -- very frustrating to go from win7 to win11 on a new pc to boot.

Apart from the standard export-import procedure already mentioned, if you want to preserve the system as it is with all data and all applications, you can go the upgrade route. First upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, then upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Home version will be upgraded to respective Home version and Professional/Ultimate will be upgraded to Pro. It takes more time than a clean installation, but if you have a good Windows 7 system you want to preserve it's worth it.

My friend is super novice and I'm only a bit ahead. She also won't want to spend the $$ to upgrade to 10 from 7. Thanks, however for that suggestion.

I still have a Win7 available on my Network as a reference machine, biggest issue is whether antivirus programs will cease to be updated, can become a security issue when accessing the Internet.

Why buy a new license? Last time I checked you can still upgrade from 7 to 10 and activate automatically for free with your current Windows 7 key. After you obtain a digital license for this computer you can reinstall Windows 10 or upgrade to 11 and activate automatically with this digital license, again for free.

The pc is very sluggish - ya know - it happens with age. Being of a senior state myself, I know all about it. But thanks for your thoughts/
