The version I have of the Photos App (2023.11110) has a flshy new slideshow with randomly selected transitions and music. But it zooms in on all pictures, meaning you lose peoples heads, etc. Legacy Photos App doesn't do that.

Anyone found a way of preventing this? Mousewheel and Ctrl-minus don't affect it.

Welcome to the forum. . I'm sorry but I do not this feature myself so here's the only things I would know to try:

Directly open the folder where the images are stored. Do the images display correctly. If so, your issue is not with the Photos app but with the lockscreen slideshow feature. Go to Procedure B below.

Procedure A
If images do not display correctly by directly opening the folder, perform a clean boot and test again. If it doesn't happen in a clean boot, you have some software conflicting with Windows. Brink's procedure will help you weed out which one. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Tutorial

Repair/reset photos app. How to Repair or Reset the Photos app on Windows 11/10

Procedure B
Try disabling the lockscreen sideshow feature. Restart and re-enable it again. Enable or Disable Lock Screen Slideshow in Windows 11 Tutorial

Make sure you have no corrupt system files that is causing this problem. Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair. If it found corruption it could not fix followup with this command (note the spaces)
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Restart computer
(Note-you can follow up with another sfc /scannow command to make sure that dism repaired the files)

Thanks for trying to help - this is the standard Photos App in Win11 - updated to 2023 version.
It displays individual photos correctly, but when you "Start Slideshow", most are enlarged to fit the screen width; pictures squarer than 16:9 have the top and bottom chopped off.

There is a Zoom Preference setting, but that affects the individual view, not the slideshow.

In Photos Legacy version, the slideshow is a simple sequence of the pictures as they appear when viewing individually. It seems to me that they designed the new slideshow, with it's panning and random transitions and music on the assumption that all our pictures are more or less 16:9. A shame, as the Legacy version has weaknesses - like not being able to sort pictures by file name.

You can still use Photos Legacy. What is Photos Legacy? - Microsoft Support.

Then set app to open by default for all your file types (ie:jpeg jpg, etc) by going to settings>apps>default APPS>Photos Legacy. Click on it and you will be given a list of file types it can open. Click on the ones you want and change its default to Photos Legacy.

Yes, I've tried it, but not being able to sort pictures by filename writes it off.

I just tried the Photo app slideshow and while the pictures are zoomed they are not cut off. My guess is that it's either the size of the pics or the scale setting of your monitor. If you increased the scale size of your monitor try setting it back to 100% and see if that helps.

Yeah, it's not the monitor scaling (I've just tried changing that). It's because I'm looking at scans of slides that are so old they are square! Because the new slideshow zooms to fill the screen, it cuts off top and bottom. The old slideshow showed a square slide in full (with black to left and right), just like the normal view of individual photos in both versions. It's a shame there isn't an option to select that on the new app. Oh, well - it's not essential for me and I'll stick with single view and the arrow keys! Thanks all

I don't know if MS actually reads the feedbacks but you can try leaving a suggestion using the Feedback app.
