Solved Rant-Overnight MS forced both Outlook 2021 and Outlook in Windows to Outlook New %#&@$ (yes that's a cuss word)

MS never ceases to amaze me. I use Outlook 2021 and my husband uses Outlook in Windows. We both had "Outlook New" toggled off as we hated it. Surprise! Surprise! Overnight we both got Outlook New turned on anyway with no option to go back to Classic Outlook. No popup notice, nothing warning us the change had been made.
The registry entry for the toggle disappeared (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences\UseOutlookNew)
Guess the unspoken message from MS is "like it or leave it".

Hum. Which Windows are you running.... I'm on the Beta channel for Windows 11 and Office 365 and I don't have that behavior.

Wait until Ms updates Outlook.
Also please explain there is a limit of 10 mail box in Outlook?

Mumma Glass, this also happened to me in Outlook 2021. I had to reload an image from a couple of days before. They also did it to the Outlook “App” so I deleted the New Outlook (APP)

I don’t usually have any qualms with MS, but I have a pet hate of being opted in to anything, at all, MS or not.

I swear, if they keep doing it to me, I’ll buy Microsoft and run it into the ground. Spray paint MS SUKZ on all the walls.

Ouch! Kate and I subscribe to Microsoft365. Outlook classic is still the same for us. There is the option in the upper right corner to "Try the new Outlook" which we have turned OFF. I looked at the "new" Outlook and much prefer the old classic Outlook.

I used early betas of the New version in Outlook for Office 365 for Business for work, and was not happy with some of the things there (like all my rules get replaced by a stupid sweep action which is nowhere near as robust). There was one other thing, I think it was the interface for preset-emails, which I had developed for on-boarding and off-boarding employees, that was not available in the New Outlook when I tried it.

For my personal Microsoft accounts, I have been using the Mail and Calendar (now Outlook for Windows) app, and I turned the new on (late) last year - and haven't had a problem with it. But I literally use it to do nothing but check emails for those Microsoft accounts, nothing fancy, so it works fine in that respect.

I don't use Outlook for Office 365 for personal accounts, so that won't affect me, and I think I've already made sure that we should not have that issue with our Business sub - but I'll double check.

My sister, though, uses Outlook for all her email accounts, personal and professional, and if this is a switch that Microsoft has flipped arbitrarily, she is gonna be easily as incensed about it as you are, Mama G....

Release version. I can't figure what triggered this. I can't say for certain exactly when it got changed in Outlook 2021 on this machine. I only realized it when I tried to download some pop3 mail and absolutely nothing happened.(I usually read that mail a couple of times a week) Pop3 uses a .pst file and the new outlook uses only .ost. The Classic Outlook handled it just fine.
These 2 old pop3 accounts are addresses I've had for years from a provider that never offered imap. That email is now served through a LAMPP server (I haven't got a clue how it works). These address are tied to so many places I didn't want to get rid of them unless I had to.

@Flashorn What you show is what I had when I turned it on this morning which is Outlook New. I never noticed the toggle was gone until I went to download the pop email I mentioned above.

Since my post this morning, I was on the verge of restoring an image. But before I did I pulled out my Win10 machine that also has Office 2021 on it and was running Classic Outlook. I exported the entire Registry Key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences]
and then imported it into this machine. (The New Outlook had no Preferences key in the registry.) Lo and behold it worked. After a restart, I was back to the interface below. Everything works now and the only thing missing is the Try New Outlook toggle I had before. Don't want that damned thing anyway.

To make my bad day worse, my storage spinner drive decided to kick the bucket while I was in the middle of all this. No warning, just flat out quit and wasn't recognized. I believe the eclipse worked some kind of voo-doo magic on me. I really am too old for this crap anymore. What a day.

@Edwin I did nothing in registry except importing that one key. This is what is under the key you referenced.

Here's a screenshot I took in my Windows 10 before I exported the key. This is what I imported into this PC. There was no preferences key in this machine until I imported it. I had no idea what I was doing.

Literally nothing. Microsoft just decided to do it for you. It’s happened to me more than once with the App, only once with Outlook in Office 2021

Sinto what did you do to get Classic back when it happened to you? Did you still have the toggle to switch New Outlook off. I didn't. The toggle disappeared.

Yeah I messed with it for an hour and decided that raising my blood pressure wasn't worth it.

And, it didn't do it again which simply tells me that it is random, but maybe I am wrong, who knows? Random would be perfect if you didn't want to be taken to task for forcibly switching people.

So right! As much as I like Outlook Classic, I'm going to go ahead and install Thunderbird and get the 4 accounts I manage working in it just so I'm prepared. I haven't used TB myself but had a few dealings with it for others. I've shied away from it for my own use because of all it's many settings. Once it's set up it's solid. It's getting things the way you want that's the problem I have with it.

So far, The original outlook is still active on this computer which is new, and new is sitting in the corner turned off.
