Hi folks
If you need to access a linux VM or real remote machine and get access to the fulll desktop GUI then it's straightforward using bog standard windows RDP -- nothing extra needs to be done on the windows machine so long as you have enabled rdp.

On the Linux machine (I'm testing with LXDE desktop (really light on resource desktop GUI) on Fedora rel 38. Should work with most other linux distros.

On the linux box allow port 3309 through your firewall (if you have firewall enabled) and install xrdp. Then start the xrdp service (sudo systemctl start xrdp) and enable it at boot for subsequent reboots etc. (sudo enable xrdp).

Ensure also the sshd daemon is running (openssl or similar - usuall installed by default).

Now on the windows box just connect via rdp --ignore any certificate messages and at the ist screen choose xvnc in the drop down, enter user name and password -- and hey - you've got your Linux GUI running on RDP (full screen too if you want it - plus sound etc (again enable in RDP session on windows)

Works fine from latest canary release - Windows 11 PRO (both from a Windows VM and a Windows real machine).

Just a clarifying point, for those subsequent reboots, you want to run
sudo systemctl enable xrdp (you left out the systemctl part, I'm sure most would have figured it out, but just in case).

You could also enable and start the service all in one line too, if you like with the --now switch
sudo systemctl --now enable xrdp

Hi there
@pparks1

nothing as great as having grandkids around !!! -- I'm always amazed at how there's so much energy and passion bundled into these kids !!! -- shows none of use are getting any younger -- but in my 30's I would probably dreaded with horror the idea of playing with grandkids !!!. or even having any.

I've been working "Free Lance" most of my working life so I've been lucky enough to select decent paying gigs -- but I'm probably the last person on the planet to admit that I would ever enjoy this -- being a grandparent and playing with the kids !!! .

Too many "non conventional families around" and even the old edifices of social structures don't help any more. Even old structures like basic religion etc. And it's amazing how many ideas you can get from even a 5 year old !!!!. And some of the modern youngsters can play the Guitar probably as well as Bach could the harpsichord or Mozart the Piano. !!

I still enjoy though messing around with all this stuff !!. And I still do even now the odd free lance I.T gig, But I'm part of what's known now as "The Great Retirement" -- especially in Europe where taxes can reach over 60% whether in the UK post Brexit (total chaos central over there with strikes and health service imploding) or within the EU itself.

Cheers

Yeah, my kid can play. He's self taught, about 2.5 years in. He plays mostly metal (which is fine by me, that's my taste in music myself). He has a pretty sizable guitar collection . His room looks like a Hard Rock cafe with all of his guitars mounted on his walls and in racks. I play the bass guitar, and I happen to have 4 in my office.

Great stuff -- although I love classical Piano myself.

I finally after years of waiting and listening to "She who mus be obeyed" got a Baby Grand and installed it in my "Man Shed" about 100 metres from main house against all her protestations. !!! Took me about 3 months to make even a passable rendering of "3 Blind Mice" on it -- possibly the easiest piano tune ever invented -- but really loved playing it -- now the Piano can come back into the main huse again. !

I also got a great audience at St,Pancras international station in London where they have pianos's to play freely - while waiting fot a Eurostar train to go to France (2 hrs by train fom London) with a colleauge to go to Eng.Vs Iceland for a Euro soccer match (which Iceland actually won !!!) a few years ago. The crowd lovred the bit I played on that piano from Gilbert and Sullivan : For He is an English man" !!

cheers
