Remapping Alt+f4

Hello all,
I am slowly starting to use more keyboard shortcuts, and I have come to love Alt+f4 for closing programs. The problem is my full size keyboard doesn't fit on my desk, so I have a new 70% keyboard (Keychron K14) coming in the mail - but it doesn't have the function keys (which is fine other than this); it is also extremely akward to use when I don't have an external keyboard attached, as I have to hold down "fn" in addition to the already akward alt+f4. I would like to remap alt+f4 to alt+Q, without having any software running in the background (sucks resources, shortens battery life, and I just hate things running in the background). Ideally I would like to do it through a registry edit, but I have no idea where to start.

If anyone can advise me with this, or have any other ideas, anything is appreciated.

thanks,
Christian

The answer is you can't remap the Windows shortcuts. You can only use a background app to replace or insert key sequences for you.

As long as you are content to remap F4 to Q I would expect Alt-Q to function as Alt-F4. It's quite some time since I've had to do this but I thought it was possible.

I used SharpKeys. Its download file is the zipfile under the Assets subheading in Releases · randyrants/sharpkeys
There are some notes about using SharpKeys in my ditties about SharpKeys - TenForums

I understand that the MS PowerToys app includes this functionality as well but I've never used it. In fact, I thought it could specifically remap the combination Alt-F4 for you so it would be better than Sharpkeys for your particular case. I haven't kept any notes about PowerToys but there are discussions about them in several TenForums/ElevenForum threads.

Best of luck,
Denis

I have powertoys (very useful), and for whatever reason it did not work to remap that particular shortcut, no idea why that might be.

I don't want to remap any of the keys that I use on a daily basis, as that would make using it for normal tasks a pain.

I know my question was quite specific, I was hoping someone might have some magic trick up their sleeve.

All I can suggest is that, when you get that new keyboard, you check it to see if it has any keys that you won't otherwise use and you check your existing keyboard to see if the same remapping would be alright on that one as well.

All the best,
Denis

Welcome to ElevenForum.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page [within the Tutorials dropdown list].
- At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
- I download a new copy each month.
- By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
- Tutorials are also listed at Tutorials - there's a shortcut to that at the top of every page.

You can search ElevenForum using the search box in the top-right corner of all ElevenForum webpages or using Advanced Search - ElevenForum
- You can also search ElevenForum threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:elevenforum.com after your search term. For example,
Taskbar setup site:elevenforum.com
- [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of ElevenForum webpages does automatically]

I will work something out...it isn't the end of the world, more something that is 'nice to have'. It is annoying that you can't remap such a basic function.
