Solved Still no 22H2 offered

My not-quite-compliant desktop is running W11 21H2 22000.1281, and as of 17 November 22, I have still not seen an offer of 22H2. Is this the beginning of the end for non-compliants, or am I concerned about nothing?

Should I go ahead and manually install 22H2?

Make a full OS backup, then just do an In-Place upgrade to 22H2.







Upgrade to 22H2...

Probably the easiest way (other than waiting on Windows Updates), to upgrade to 22H2 is this.
Use Option #2 (this link), to get the 22H2 ISO image, save it to your desktop.

Then use that ISO image to do an In-Place Upgrade to 22H2.

Here is the short version of the In-Place Upgrade tutorial...

DISABLE non-Microsoft:
a) antivirus software
b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free


Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.
Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.
The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

After you've upgraded to Windows 11 22H2, run Windows Updates to get the latest version.
When that's done, make a fresh backup.

Interesting: When I get to the updates, not now screen and I then go to Sources in the BT folder and delete the appraiserres.dll file and click Next, I keep being told that Windows is having trouble determining whether this machine is capable of running W11, and it asks me to go back and try Setup again.

I've tried three times, and I keep getting the same message after I've deleted appraiserres and clicked Next.

Never had this problem before. The appraiserres trick has always worked.

Hello Dan,

Manually upgrading to 22H2 using the latest 22H2 ISO should be the easiest way without losing anything.

That's what I'm using. Just downloaded this morning. When I mount it and choose setup.exe, it runs up to the point where I tell it Not now, and delete the appraiserres.dll file, and then it produces the "having trouble" message.

You could try clean installing 22H2, but I would recommend to create a system image first to have available to restore if 22H2 fails.

Rather than going through all the re-installing of everything and all the other required actions after a clean install, I think I'll just sit on it and wait for MS to offer me 22H2. If that hasn't happened by the New Year, I'll re-think this.

I'm not so pleased with 22H2 (on my other - fully compliant - machine) as I'd hoped. The loss of the ability to use the ribbon is a biggie for me, and I had to do a LOT of additional jockeying to get the new version to play to my personal wishes.

If @Try3 comes on, he may have some ideas. He probably has the most experience with non-compliant machines.
I'd bet he could install 22H2 on a toaster if he wanted.

Not being offered 22H2 seems to be normal for a non-compliant computer.

Yes, you can go ahead and do it manually using the Modified procedure below. That's what others have done.
I think these two have both done the amended procedure I have described below.

Modified procedure
1 Normal preps - Disconnect from the internet, disconnect every device that's possible.
2 Instead of upgrading to 22H2 directly from its ISO I will extract the ISO to a convenient folder or make an installation USB from it [which are actually two ways of saying almost the same thing].
3 I will create an empty file called appraiserres.dll
4 In the extracted ISO's Sources folder, I will paste my empty file to overwrite the proper appraiserres.dll file.
5 Then I'll be able to run the setup.exe in the extracted folders to do the In-place upgrade instead of using the ISO directly.

I recently used this modified procedure for a Windows 10 Version update on a venerable Windows 10 computer [2005]. The procedure worked but the upgrade failed at the first restart so that computer remains limited to Version 1709.

What a brilliant discovery! Just deleting appraiserres.dll doesn't work, but substituting an empty file named appraiserres.dll works perfectly!

Thank you so much for taking the time to get me past the blockade I had run into.

Just a few notes on my version of your modified procedure:
1 My "normal preps" include only killing my non-MS anti-malware. Printers are on wi-fi. Only the mouse is left attached. I didn't bother to disconnect from the Net. Thought I'd see what happened. Answer: nothing.
2 I never use the downloads folder. I download everything to a special folder I call AATemp, on my D drive. Thus, my ISO was in AATemp, and I could mount it and run setup.exe from there.
3 Opened my text editor, typed nothing, saved as appraiserres.dll, in AATemp. Right-clicked and copied it.
4 I just went ahead and ran setup.exe, and then when I reached the Not Now screen, I scooted over to my C:\ drive and deleted the appraiserres.dll file and pasted in my empty one.
5 I hit Next, and the whole installation went right through without a hitch of any kind.

If your is system is not compliant, you will NEVER be offered 22H2. As a result, a manual update is the only way to go.

Guessing tpm is absent ?

I am in the same boat. I just feel that according to what ive been reading that 21H2 versus 22H2 isnt really that big of a deal difference. And for all the hassle to go through to get it on my PC manually Ill simply just wait.

If you are running Windows 11 21H2 on an unsupported device then you will get all the cumulative updates, but when it comes to the Feature Update to 22H2 that will not be offered by Windows Update. The reason is that whenever there is a new version of Windows, then Window Update runs compatibility checks. You will only be offered the feature update to the next version once it has passed all the checks.

For an unsupported device that will never happen. The only way to go from 21H2 to 22H2 is to manually run an in-place upgrade. Once upgraded to 22H2 you will still get all cumulative updates as before.

I have run the microsoft checks on my system and passes all checks. besides that my TPM is Enabled and good to go and my PC has pretty good specs, not the best by any means but way more than need for new versions of windows at least for the next 5 years before I upgrade my PC again. So, even with that said is I believe what your saying is I will get the full update but not for a few months? or the only way Ill be able to go from 21H2 to 22H2 is doing an in place upgrade?

Nope. Just my CPU is one number short on that PC. Everything else is fine.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm perfectly willing to go through today's exercise again for each feature update, to keep that backup/test/experiment PC on 11 so that I can make use of it when I need it.

If it passes all the checks then it is a supported device for Windows 11. You should in due course be offered the feature update to 22H2.

Theree are a couple of things that may mean you have to wait. The first is simply that, as with all previous feature updates, it is a phased rollout. Not all compatible machines get offered the update straight away. Typically a rollout of a new version of Windows can take up to 6 months before it has been offered to all machines.

The second thing is machine-specific. If Microsoft is aware of issues with specific hardware/software they will impose a Safeguard Hold on rolling it out to those machines affected. Once the issue has been resolved by Microsoft and the OEMs concerned the hold will be lifted and the update offered to those machines.

As was noted, you should be offered the update eventually. Microsoft does phased rollouts so even if you have the latest, greatest specs, you may not necessarily be offered the update immediately.

Also, there are sometimes situations where a blocking hold is placed on systems with specific problematic hardware until a fix is available.
