OS
Win 11 21h2
When I let PC update to the september functional update, the PC is booting and then the background picture is pumping ( on and off). I can do nothing more with the PC and have to restore the system by Acronis Restore from an older image. Microsoft Windows Support wants remote permission, but I don`t want because of different reasons.
System is Win 11 pro 21H2 Build 220002057

Sometimes there is delay in the Desktop starting after a System Update. Maybe be patient.

If the desktop is still inoperable, then try terminating and re-starting the explorer.exe process, from Task Manager.

Waiting did not solve the problem. I can`t use any pressure key and no mouse during booting the update. So I can`t terminate Task Manager and restart it.

Try this, on the sign -in screen press and hold the shift key, select the power icon and select restart. In the Option screen that opens select Troubleshoot -Advanced options and Command Prompt. In CMD type sfc /scannow (space between 'c' and '/') and Enter. Once it's run type Exit.
Restart.

How long have you tried waiting to reboot after giving the system permission to update? And by "pressure" key, do you mean keyboard key? Until the update has actually finished installing and restarting and finally gives you a stable login interface, HID (Human Interface Device) input will be impossible. Please forgive me if I tell you things that you already know; while I have almost forty years of experience with Windows and other non-Microsoft operating systems, I have no way of knowing your education and experiences in these matters.

It took me about ten minutes or so to initiate and complete the update that you spoke of. Depending upon how up to date your system was when you initiated the offending update (if your system wasn't current when you started the update process, it might help explain why you are experiencing this frustrating issue), it could take longer, the computer restarting several times before you're able to log in. If you have waited more than twenty to thirty minutes, and you still can't get a login screen, you should be able to initiate system recovery during the boot process, before the Windows kernel loads. The keystroke combination to do this varies depending upon your motherboard manufacturer (if it's a non-retail machine) or your computer manufacturer (if you purchased a name brand device) and the BIOS that's installed on the motherboard. The necessary keystroke combination should flash on your monitor for a few seconds before the Windows kernel loads into process...unless you have customized that item in your system BIOS (which I suggest you should do to make the information persist for a longer duration). After you have successfully started the system recovery options, you should have a few options: Use System Restore to roll back the OS to pre-update condition, restore from a specified image, or restore to factory condition. Each option may present its own problems.

I'd suggest that after you recover your system by whatever means that you decide upon, you should do something different before trying to update your system again: Run error-checking, diagnostics, and malware scans. It's possible that the update may have attempted to write the new data in bad sectors, resulting in a corrupted system image. If all these things fail to deliver satisfactory results, you have very limited options to proceed, and may have no choice but to restore your machine to factory condition and update that. Oh, and you might want to review your Event Log. If you aren't in the habit of doing so, the log will have a great many entries that you might find impossible to make sense of. Review your log and delete entries, cleaning it up so that you can make sense of new entries later. Note that these entries may not make sense to any but the most proficient users, so don't be surprised if they don't make much sense to you. It's a learning process.

Best wishes, friend.

FWIW, I had what sounds to be that same behavior when I was running an older version of EplorerPatcher.

@altaylor
and how do you solve the problem with the patched Explorer and windows update?
As far I can remember I have made some modifikations in the registry to get in win 11 the same taskbar as in win 10. The modifications have been described in the german PC-Paper called CHIP.
A user of a german forum posted to me too just now, that the new update of win11 provoke problems with the explorer when it was modificated before and that microsoft is aware of this but is not willing to change anything (punishment for patching before?).
Now I don`t know how the original registry looks like in relation to the explorer.

@gremlinkurst
The first time it updated automatically overnight. In the morning I then see the "pumping" backgroundpicture. I mean with pressure keys the
keyboard keys.
I restored the system with ACRONIS. Acronis allows to store an image of your disc on maybe a portable USB-device.
The systems tools are showing no problems with system, so do malware scans.

Mensch! Ist sehr schlecht!...that I couln't help you, I mean. So...have you tried to update after restoring with Acronis? I've used it before, but currently, I don't need it. In fact, I can't remember the last time I needed to restore my system. I had to do it all the time with Windows 7 via a variety of methods that included Acronis, and I think I had to do it once in Windows 10, but so far, I've not found it necessary to do in Windows 11. These updates that Microsoft does have pissed me off for years, but they're getting really bad with this platform, making arbitrary decisions that grossly impact performance and productivity in most negative ways, in my opinion damaging the operating system. They've got some grade-A idiots writing code for them. I can say that with authority, having been coding and administering for almost forty years. But, hey: Anyone that tells you that they know everything about Windows is a liar. I'm no liar. I don't know everything. Wish I did. I just try to help when I can. Viel Glück, mein freund.

When I mentioned "ExplorerPatcher" and the outdated version's effect on my desktop, I was referring to a specific program with that name (ExplorerPatcher), whose purpose for me (among probably many other things it does) is to manage the Windows 11 Taskbar in ways that make it more like Windows 10.

I was NOT referring to any sort of "patching" of the native Windows 11 "File Explorer" program/app.

If you are not running "ExplorerPatcher", then the post doesn't apply. (My apologies if I caused confusion.)

As far I can remember I have made some modifikations in the registry to get in win 11 the same taskbar as in win 10. The modifications have been described in the german PC-Paper called CHIP.

Restore your Acronis backup, then log in and pause updates for a week In WU Settings so it doesn't try to install again.

Then, If you can find the original article or tutorial that you used from CHIP.de, you can try to undo the changes they tell you to make. Remember that you'll want ot go in reverse order, so from bottom of article backwards, to undo the changes. Usually, most places with such tutorials on how to change things will have good screenshots showing what you change and where, but they might *not* have screenshots of what the default values are when changing. See also if they have a .REG to make the changes (because then they might also have a .REG file to undo the changes.

However, an easier method to recover from the changes that are possibly blocking the update installation might be to simply perform an in-place upgrade, using our tutorial on it from here:

This should take care of most of the registry edits made to the system, in terms of actual OS components and such. And since you already have an Acronis backup, it won't hurt to try. If the in-place upgrade doesn't fix it, you still have the Acronis backup to restore from again, we can go about getting you to pause updates for a bit longer as you try to undo the changes.

But, for the most part, in-place upgrade works fantastically in situations like this.

I had done this what you recomment. I use the method opion 2 with ISO of this tutorial. The result was the same fault as before with only one difference that the icons of my apps appear on desktop and this desktop is "pumping" (appears and disappears).
I had to recover my old image with Acronis again.

Hmmm. Then either your system really does not like that update, or else there is something else (software, perhaps) that is interfering.

Just out of curiosity, do you have an older Acronis backup that you could try (make a new backup of data files if you need to) to see if the update applies there? Might be a bungled earlier update that it blocking the newer one, and the last Acronis backup already has that older one in it, so....

You could try restarting the computer into Safe Mode. Safe Mode is not a long term fix. It will however help diagnose the nature of the fault.
To start the computer in Safe Mode, please follow "Option One: Boot to Safe Mode in WIndows 11 from Advanced Startup (WinRE)" from this Tutorial:
