Is anyone else confused by the changing specs for USB? Apparently, USB 3 is being renamed USB 3.2

The reason I ask is because I want to buy a USB 3.2 Gen 2 thumb drive, but I don't know if my nearly new laptop will support the 900MBPS rate.

I plan to use this for Macrium Backups.

The USB should fall back to the older version, the device is much like other things in computing, can't work any faster than the slowest part connected., My external USB 3 drives work on 2 or 3, the drive end of the cable is different from those on USB 2 drives but the computer end fits either, just color-coded to show the difference.
