Drag the item out of the Start Menu onto your Desktop...

A lot of 'built-in' icons are located in C:\Windows\System32\SHELL32.dll file when using right-click of an icon/shortcut and Properties, Change icon.

I am not trying to change icons from icon files i just want to be able to make send to desktop shortcuts of course without the shortcut at the end i use tweak ui for this. the post above you worked fine however it is really annoying that when you do a search for an app you can not drag and drop as above you have to go to the programs menu and drag it.

Part of the ability to change the icon for a shortcut is changing the displayed name, e.g. the default for winver.exe shows just that so I rename it to Windows Version and use the blue ! icon, signifies Information.
