Windows 11 installation royally messed up 😔

Only thing I could suggest when ready to throw in the towel and do a clean install is first search registry for all Nvidia references and delete them. Then reboot and try to install video drivers again. Just a last ditch effort since you've verified a clean install of the latest release works.

True but then his bootloader could (and probably would) end up on the first drive. It's ALWAYS recommended when installing windows to physically disconnect or disable in UEFI bios all other drives except the one where you are installing windows to insure that the bootloader is installed on the same drive as windows..
i assumed disconnecting the current hdd while installing the new one was a gimme as i, in a later step, said to slave off the original hdd to pull drivers manually lol.

Make another try with a message to Blue Robot to help.
I believe the problem is about the registry like mine.
Also if you have a recent image backup is a good solution. You will lose few things.

In the end I decided to face the evil and try a clean install. With TransWiz's ForensiT Move Computer help to preserve my user's data I installed a fresh Windows 11 22631.3527 and then restored the saved user data and moved back all the old files and folders the Windows installation put in Windows.old.

To my surprise this worked pretty well, and I didn't have to reinstall or fiddle with the vast majority of my programs, tools, utilities, licenses, configurations, etc. 90% or more worked fine straight away just by doing that.

Now SFC, DISM and Windows Update all work fine.

First thing I did now was a full backup in Macrium *and* made a second copy of it in another machine... 😆

Cheers and thanks to everyone that tried to help with this crap.

Yeah... no problem anymore with that.

Now the only issue I have is that the search function in the Start menu doesn't work... 🤔

I don't have the issue on Open Shell because I've a third party start menu. And I installed Fluent Search to look for stuff you can't find with the default Windows Search.

In this guide, you’ll learn the steps to reset the Windows Search components to fix problems with the feature on Windows 11.

I found out it was due to (stupid) me doing a 'Take Ownership' of the whole Windows\SystemResources folder to be able to modify icons and colors from shell32.dll.mun and zipfldr.dll.mun.

I already found out a less invasive way running Total Commander as a TrustedInstaller via WinaeroTweaker, so it can rename and overwrite those files without haven to 'Take Ownership' of the whole folder and files, which causes undesirable side effects like the broken search feature in Start Menu.

But just in case... after doing that ' Take Ownership' mistake... is there any way to go back and reset the files and folder back to their original ownership and permissions?

I tried running the typical SFC /Scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth but they didn't solve that... 🤔

Like suggested by @glasskuter it's good idea to repair install Windows 11 this will reset file/folder permissions.
