23H2 appearing again in Windows Update!

Windows 11
So, I have been tinkering with Windows 11 for the last week or so.

The first thing I did was of course installing all the updates, with numerous reboots, until everything was up-to-date.
Those updates included the massive 23H2 update, which installed perfectly.
Windows Update was showing "your system is up-to-date" and "no updates available".

After all the updates, I went through some customization, which took me several days.
That customization involved tools like Winaero Tweaks, Icon Spacing, and some registry hacks that have been published on this board.

However to my surprise, Windows Update now shows again the 23H2 update, even though it's already been installed a week ago.
Winver even says that I have 22H2, with build 22621.2715 ! :eek1: That can't be true. I don't understand.

I suppose that may be due to the customization, but it's a bit disturbing.
And I don't want to apply the update again, because probably that would undo all the work I have done.
And I don't want Microsoft to forcibly apply that update, of course.

So, what should I do exactly? Thank you.

23h2 wasn’t a massive update. 22h2 moment 4 was decently big. That installed .621. The 23h2 will install .631 build. No tweaks should be undone.. I lost nothing in regard to mods when I installed 23h2

If I recall correctly, 23H2 was more than a gig, which is quite massive to me. But anyway.
My point is: I have already installed 23H2. I'm not crazy. I'm positive that it has been installed. So how is this possible?...

As for the tweaks, I'm not so sure:
  • Some tweaks are desktop tweaks (ex: Winaearo, icon spacing), which affect mainly the registry.
  • Others are Explorer tweaks (ex: getting rid of Home, Favorites, OneDrive...). Those tweaks affect mainly the registry too.
  • And others are debloating (ex: disabling Edge, disabling ads, disabling telemetry, which I guess includes disabling some services).
I guess re-applying 23H2 would undo all the debloating, so I'd have to do it all over again. Am I wrong?

What exactly does windows update show? Have you got a screenshot? And had you looked at Winver after you first installed 23H2 to confim you had been successful?

EDIT: I can’t see why the update would disturb your changes. I don’t think I have ever had to redo something I had applied previously, after any update. In fact when I did an in-place upgraded from Windows 10 to Eleven, nothing had changed except for the version.
But don’t hold me to that.

Take a look at the recent updates in update History and see if it is there.
If it's there, you can use the pause updates until you find out why or you
can hide the update until such time as you resolve the issue.

23H2 was not released to everyone at the same time.
It's my understanding that there were 2 versions of KB5032190 in Nov. that applied to both 23H2 and 22H2.
The update bumps the build number to 22631.2715 for version 23H2. I believe this is the latest release version right now. Tomorrow, that will change.

So, what should I do exactly? Thank you.
If my system was on 22h2 and I was offered 23h2, I would apply it. Just to be on the safe side I always backup my system before an update. I'm a fanatic about that.
With Microsoft's screwed up way of updating we may see more surprises tomorrow on update Tuesday.

i have modified my system with hundreds of tweaks... with both winaero tweaker as well as registry modifications. updating windows will not undo those, unless they remove features from windows through an update, but maybe i'm just lucky.
if you've already installed 23h2, there is no way that it reverted unless you uninstalled an update package or you ran a restore point

This looks to be a new build, as from your Specs under My Computer you speak of "a work in progress." How did you install Windows 11 originally? Was it from an ISO taken from the Microsoft site, or was it from a retail Win 11 USB?

@wordsmoth : my WIP computer is my main rig (desktop). Here I'm talking about my GF's laptop, so not the same, sorry.

So, I have checked the update history, and indeed it doesn't show 23H2!

Capture d'écran 2023-12-12 023109.jpg

This is really weird. I'm positive that I updated everything (12 days ago as you can see), until there were no more updates available. I even clicked on "Search for updates" several times just to be sure. And I'm 100% certain that 23H2 was among the updates that I installed that day. I remember it well, it took forever to download over WiFi compared to all other updates.

So my best guess is that something failed in the process and 23H2 wasn't installed somehow.

I am somewhat comforted by all your comments mentioning that all my tweaks and changes should survive the 23H2 update. So I guess I will perform ONCE AGAIN the update in the next few hours and we'll see how it goes. Sounds good? :-)

OK, I have performed the 23H2 update again. This time it seems to have worked.
Winver also confirms 23H2. Update says "up to date" once again.

I really don't see what went wrong 12 days ago. Except a failed update maybe.
Everything seems to work so far (except the fingerprint scanner, lol).
Fingers crossed!

Thank you guys! You were really helpful! ;-)

I received the 23H2 update on November 11, 2023. Since then I have received four more updates. It looks like all of your updates were for 22H2.

I'm having the same issue. My problem is that if I look into Update history, it shows this exact update was successfully installed already and then failed a good 3 or 4 times after. How do I get it so Windows Update KNOWS this has already been applied???
