Hi folks

When setting up a complete clean fresh install of Windows 11 I get the "Set up devices stuff" with a Free offer and either NEXT or DECLINE. After selecting the DECLINE option it still prompts me for a Credit card number. Fprtunately I was using a VM so I just did a "Force power off". If I DECLINE an offer why should I still have to give a credit card number. Bad one Ms. !!!!

Cheers

Seems Microsoft is still working on something mentioned a few years ago about WaaS and SaaS, Windows as a Service and Software as a Service, headed more toward Cloud computing.

Hi,
I usually just ctr+shift+alt+delete repeatedly until the screen goes away
Then use sign out on the list and boom get more out of windows or blah.... is gone and just sign in as normal

It's either that or use ask later which I don't ever want them to do
I've used all the fixes for this and updates always undo them or ms just ignores either way this issue is a new low lol
I saw there was a update counting old versions of office installed guess this is why free trail is forced lol to screw up old installs :zany:

P.S.
Maybe rufus iso fix would get rid of the office and CC message.

I have not encountered this. I set up a OOB OEM system for a friend a few days ago. I declined 365 trial and was never asked for any payment method. Once I was logged into her account I went to
Settings>System>Notifications-all the way to bottom expand is an option named additional settings-I unchecked
"Suggest ways to get the most out of windows and finish setting up device"
I got no nags afterwards.

Microsoft knows I'm a Microsoft 365 subscriber as soon as I log in to a new installation of Windows and automatically installs my Microsoft Office with my 1 terabyte of cloud OneDrive. I like the efficiency.

i saw the same thing. My only workaround was to create a new install USB with Rufus and select the option to not enforce the Windows Account login and to create a local user.

Another thought on this, if, during install, during the onedrive setup, you did check the box to save files to "this PC", then all your usert folders are being stored only in onedrive. Your user files ARE NOT on your PC if you did not check this box. It's quite possible this part of account setup is now generating the request for payment info if you are running out of free onedrive storage.

For me, it never got to that point. It did the privacy questions and then went to Office next.

Stumps me then. The first thing I do is on a clean install or OOB setup is remove the Office 365. I do this as well for others if I know they do not want any part of Office 365 or Onedrive. I don't know if that might change the scenario or not.

I've set up or helped others set up at least 100 computers on 10 and 11 and not one of the users wanted to have anything to do with Ofc365 or Onedrive. That app was the first to go. For anyone who wants an office app but doesn't want to pay for Office or deal with the cloud, I steer them toward Apache OpenOffice.

Was trying to duplicate this. I created a new VM in Hyper-V. Created a dual cpu VM, with tpm enabled.

Booted from Windows 11 22H2 ISO
Picked Windows 11 Pro
Said I didn't have a key
When It got to setting up my account, I entered in a fake email and password, which then allowed me to create a new local user
Accepted defaults for the privacy screen.

Got on splash screen saying that I had support for touch and did I want to learn more about gestures, which I said no.

I'm now on the desktop and seeing nothing whatsoever for Office365. When are you getting prompted?

The computer I was installing it on is a Microsoft Surface Studio laptop which has a Windows 10 Home key baked on the board. With Windows 10, I always upgrade to Pro after installation. The Office credit card issue is coming up during the final stages of the OS installation process, right after it prompts for the Microsoft Account to log into.

I will have to try the fake email address and password.

Just some food for thought -
You might like to consider LibreOffice instead. It's ongoing support is better than OpenOffice's.

LibreOffice is pretty similar to old versions of MSOffice - see their sample screenshots.

I guess no one went and looked, if they did, they would have noticed MS goofed on the order or something.

from the linked thread, to not be forced to enter a credit card number (like you all think is required):

Step 1. Click try free
Step 2. Click decline
Step 3. Throw away tin foil hats.

Exactly. You can't decline the free trial to get past the credit card info. No tin hats here. Read the thread again.

If you click decline it goes to the credit details page. You click try for free and it continues with the install with the 'not ready for a subscription' page - deliberately obtuse don't you think?
The tiny 'save your files only on this PC' text is also deviously easy to miss if you don't or can't (upload speeds or data limits) use OneDrive.
If this attitude continues with Microsoft towards their customers, what the heck is future clean installs going to be like? You'll certainly be needing your wits about you. Seems Microsoft is successfully pushing more and more people to have local accounts instead.

Fabler,

I think the misunderstanding arises in your post #15 from the diagram after your comment, "and finally it sulks", because that diagram has a Next button that seems to offer a way out.

All the best,
Denis

That screen shows only after you have to accept the 'try for free' box previously . Why not make it as simple as with the ' Get 100 GB more....' screen. A simple decline box and that's it.
