Before the February and March updates Face Recgnition was working. Now its not.. I reran the setup process but the face rec isn't working I can log with the PIN but not Face rec. It's like its not being turned on during setup.
So any ideas? Is one of the recent updates breaking my login process?

When I login in the morning and press the space bar all I get is the prompt fro the PIN. It used to trun on the camera and start scanning my face.
Thanks for responding quickly.

What do you see when you go under Settings > accounts > Sign in options > face recognition?

Does it show it is supported and enabled?

If you launch the camera app (by searching for camera in the start menu) is your camera functioning?

Here's what I see when I go under Settings > accounts > Sign in options > face recogniti
1713927926823.png

Seems to imply the feature is supported. The camera app does work. Also when I run though the Racial Rec setup the camera light comes on and the red light blinks while my face has a square around it. After it appears done there is a note to setup the PIN, the PIN is already setup and is the only option when logging in.
I haven't found a way to tell if Facial Rec is activated.

Ok, so since you ran through the setup again, launch the camera app and ensure the camera can see your face. Then lock your machine and see if it unlocks with face.

So I ran the enable version of the reg line, It didn't appear to do anything. I went through the Facial Rec setup again and still not running. Just for kicks I ran the disable line and watched it change the registry and add the disable dword. I reran the enable version and watched it remove the disable dword. But still no joy.

I don't see "the looking for you" text on the lock screen.
So that sounds like its not actually set up then. Try changing your windows hello pin, (or reset it), and then set the camera back up.

There is a firmware update tool for the camera here you can try:

I notice the camera is certified for windows 10 hello. But it does not mention windows 11. Windows 11 changed some things in the way windows hello works to be more secure. It is possible these changes affected the camera. But if it worked before in windows 11 like you say, then it should be working.

Seems like something is wrong with the hello system. I did get the PIN changed but in that process it killed the keyboard and I had to turn on the screen keyboard to enter a new PIN. Restarting the PC cured the keyboard problem, I'm almost afraid to this. After getting the PIN changed and the PC restarted, the Facial Rec is still not working. The problem did happen after the last couple of updates. I'm going to have to start a log when updates are applied and when I star having problems. After the November updates the hibernate function stopped working, the update in Feb brought it back.
I did find and applied the camera firmware update on Monday, that didn't help either. I'm still open to anything you might come up with. Security is important to me, got some grandkids running around here and the Facail Rec keeps them from using the computer without supervision.

Thanks for the help by the way, keep it coming.

The problem could also be the tpm is hosed in some way preventing biometrics from working. Turn off bitlocker /device encryption on all drives first. Clearing the TPM resets it to an unowned state. After you clear the TPM, the Windows operating system will automatically reinitialize it and take ownership again.
Use at your own risk.

Thats is extremely odd. Are you having any other problems with your system?

And it might be worth trying what @glasskuter suggested. That was a good thought.

I don't use bitlocker, so didn't try that option. I did clear the TPM, there was no choice to stop or start the TPM. That didn't fix anything.
So started going through the logs in Event Viewer. I did find this recorded during another try with the Facial Rec:

thanks, I was going to suggest event viewer next, but you beat me to it.

Have you tried another usb port for the camera? Preferably in the back?

Maybe try setting up another user account and see if you can enable windows hello for that?

You did try changing the pin correct? And then resetting up the camera again? Want to make sure.

Unfortunately though I am not seeing much coming up with that error message. I have asked for help from some other members around here, but it may be worth a try getting a newer camera that is confirmed to be compatible with windows 11 hello and seeing if that one works. Having said that, like I stated before to my knowledge any camera that works for windows 10 hello should also work with windows 11 hello. I do not know of any instance where windows hello is different enough between 10 and 11 that would cause it to no longer function.

New wrinkle this morning. Windows wouldn't recognize my PIN that I set yesterday and was working. I had to reset it.
Since nothing is showing up for a cause, I'm thinking of doing a restore from backup. It's from early April and Facial Rec was working. As I add updates on I can see which one causes a problem.

I was in accounts looking to create a new account to test Facial Rec (FR) and its showing a passkey. I don't remember creating one but could have.
1714491248630.png
I can't delete it, error is "The passkey can't be deleted because it's needed to login". I would like to delete to start the FR over again. If I can get FR to work with it great but not a high priority.

I suspected something was up with the windows hello pin. So it looks like your account got converted to passkey instead of hello pin.

If you go into your microsoft account on the website you can remove the passkey and then you should be able to remove the passkey and set up a pin for windows hello.

Or you might want to just try following the directions from here:
