Solved how do i print screen in windows 11 pro

Hi, why the windows makes cumbersome procedure to print a screen in the latest edition.
I tried print screen, it is not working and it pops up a different screen not related to the subject at all.
In earlier versions, just I click the print screen button and I got the jpg of reduced size stored in the relevant folder.
But here it is too difficult to take a print screen shot . The snipping tools are difficult to focus.
cannot this made as simple as in earlier versions.
If i transfer a jpg file from modern phone, it is not allowed as it size is in mbs.
please give me easy solutions . Even bing chat would not help me.

That 'feature' was prevalent back in the days of DOS with Win3.x and earlier using the LPT/Parallel Port for Dot-Matrix printers that connected to a computer via cables, usually the 25-pin parallel port. The advent of Win95 and USB printers began the changing with the merging of DOS and Windows into one Operating System. A part of the changing was the disappearance of the 9-pin and 25-pin Communication ports also in favor of USB devices. The mid-90s also was when LaserJet and InkJet printers became more common. My first printer in '92 was a Dot-Matrix with a color ribbon adapter.

If you want a quick way, just press Ctrl+PrtSc, it copies the whole screen to the clipboard. then you can paste it straight into your reply, as I did here:

Alt+PrtSc does the same, but just copies the currently selected window.

The Snipping Tool is far more versatile, and well worth getting to grips with. You can snip any part of the screen you want.

Oh, and if you are using the clipboard a lot, you might like to turn on Clipboard History, so you can see your clips and choose which to paste.

control prt scr does not work for me. I have disabled the prt scre to open by default snipping tool as per Brinks tutorial. But, it is not working. When I use ctrl prt scr and open paint and there is no right click menu to paste it. what I am missing. is there a glitch.

In Paint, use Edit > Paste, or press Ctrl+V.

I use the Greenshot program. The defaults are:

Capture full screen: Ctrl + Print Screen keys
Capture window: Alt + Print Screen keys
Capture region: Print Screen key

I normally auto-save a jpg file to a folder but that is configurable.

I use Snipping Tool on Win10 and Win11, copies the selected area to the Clipboard and saves to the Screenshots folder in either Documents or Pictures.

This may help... it allows you to set the PrtSc key back to it's classic use.
Where all it does is take a screenshot and save it to the clipboard.

I and my daughter were only using Print Screen to take screenshots, but using Snipping Tool is just as easy and offers much more control over what to screenshot. If you don't want to save to the pictures folder, you can save directly to a USB device - configure in app settings.

One thing I found was that if you select the "Full Screen" mode for a screenshot, there is a 15/20 second delay before capture - the delay options button is greyed out, whereas if you select Window/ Freehand etc, you can select No Delay/5/10secs. Not sure if there's a way to get no delay in a Full Screenshot?

Apart from that, I would use Snipping Tool over Print Screen.

After DOS, and for some years, I shopped around for a decent Print Screen program. There were several, some free and some not so free.
Then a good friend of mine and a real Windows Guru, showed me how to use the Prnt/Scrn key in conjunction with a FREE Program called simply, "Photo Filtre" (yes, it's French) to copy a screen and be able to crop it, edit it and save it.

Never in all my borned days have I ever had to use any control key in conjunction with the Prnt/Scrn key to copy a desktop screen and save it to the Windows Clip Board. From which it can be Pasted into any decent Photo Editor program.

I'll never understand, why some folks try to make something complicated out of something so very simple.

I keep a shortcut to Photo Filtre in my Task Bar, for quick access. So I can just hit the Prnt/Scrn (PS) key once, then pop open Photo Filtre and in the open screen, I Rt Click, and hit "Paste as a new image". And, there it is, my desktop screen, ready for editing and saving.

It's so simple, a child could do it!

No fancy tool... just an old image editor (Paint Shop Pro 7.04).
Ready, set.... GO!

Faster than a speeding bullet. Able to leap tall topics at a single bound.
Look up in the sky... it's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's the "classic" PrtSc key.

Hi, Ghot, I already tried your suggestion, but could not right click to paste the screen. I have disabled the snipping tool as per the tutorial you have linked.
But, it is a fact that the print screen never works without pressing the function key. This has solved my problem. I did notice function key in laptop. But my pc keyboard has a function key. I tried Fn+Alt+PrScreen and it worked without any problem. it is next to control key and if i press the three keys, i get my jpg with low bytes jpg picture.

So, it is keyboard related thing. some keyboards do have function key and some do not. If there is no function key, either alt print would be enough, or print screen itself is enough, provided you disabled snipping tool.

So, it is keyboard related thing. some keyboards do have function key and some do not. If there is no function key, either alt print would be enough, or print screen itself is enough, provided you disabled snipping tool.

Having to use the Fn key with the PrtScr key is not standard with computers. It only has to be done with certain computers. Of all the computers I have I only have to do that with the Dell Latitude laptop. Note the Prnt Scrn key below is blue. That means that I to to use the sequence Fn + Prnt Scrn. Otherwise, the F11 key does not work as a print screen function.

I have found with my Windows 11 laptop that:

1. With Use the Print screen key to open screen capture = Off in settings then the only thing that works is:

Print "Full screen" = Windows-key + PrtSc-key

The screenshot goes into the folder: C:/Users/%username%/Pictures/Screenshots

2. With Use the Print screen key to open screen capture = On in settings then the snipping tool is functional. The default is:

Print "Rectangle" = PrtSc-key

However, if you look at the top of the screen there is a menu. If you select options then you can change the type of capture from the default "Rectangle" to "Window" or "Full screen".

Note that the snipping tool screenshot also goes into the folder: C:/Users/%username%/Pictures/Screenshots

I have a hard time understanding how the snipping tool built into 11 is difficult to use. I use it pretty much everyday at work.

I keep it pinned to my taskbar.

You open it up and get something like this

Click where it says Rectangle mode, and you can choose the options for the snip. A box, the window itself, the full screen, or freeform where you can draw a shape around what you want.

Once you pick your option, you hit the + New button in the corner and you get your screenshot. You can then hit ctrl-C to copy it, and then control-v to paste it into whatever you are working on..just like I did making this post.

I also have Notebooks of different brands [HP, Dell, Lenovo], sizes, ages and different models within those brands that use the Fx keys differently. And the functions of needing the Fn key have the other marked with the same color.

Even though I could use the Snipping Tool I have chosen not to use it. Instead I use a a third-party tool like I have shown in Post #7. I find it more flexible than the Snipping Tool. The output goes to a folder I have chosen. I use the following key combinations:
Print Rectangle = PrtSC
Print Window = Alt + PrtSC
Print Full Screen = Ctrl + PrtSC

I was going to ask the same question but this thread is already here. I guess after you select Print Screen you have to click in the window you want copied to the clipboard because just using the keyboard does not copy anything to the clipboard? Unless you have it set for full screen?

I guess I can get use to this . . . LOL

Fn + PrntScrn keys gets the Snipping Tool just as does WinKey + Shift + S on the Notebook I'm on now.

Still I am having problem to this simple screen print. Now, when I click alt func pr screen, i do not get anything. I think that there is still some bug. The same key worked fine before some days, but now it is not working. probably some updates would have changed something.i do not know.
Could some one give solution. I have disabled snipping tools in settings. etc.but still....
