How much RAM can my laptop take

Hello, i have used the CMD prompt of wmic memphysical get maxcapacity to get my memory capacity which is 32gb however a crucial scan said it was 20GB or 24GB (?) which may have something to do with BIOS limitations? Can someone help in laymans terms what i can get and which is correct?

Looks like those product pages say a max of 16GB for all subvariants of the X515J (A, F and P). Why not just fill in the rest of the blanks @Marcus Vinicus? HTH,

Thank you, yes that page was very confusing, there are numbers and letters all over the place. And it dosent answer my question of when i did the cmd part it said 32gb? That page also says 16 where as the crucial scan said 20 or 24 whatever that means? Im more confused than when i started

Hmm I always wondered *IF the companies are somewhat Lying with the amount *IT can take you know? I've seen a MB MAX at 16GB but 32GB! Wouldn't hurt to try. If it fails you'll get a BEEP or just won't Boot

@WAI assuming those extra memory modules are lying around, I agree. But people usually have to #BUY them first!

From what I see online, though, it does look like all the ASUS X515J sub-models max out at 16 GB. Very interesting! I guess if you can return the SODIMMs, it's probably worth a try. Good observation!

I don't know what to suggest.

The Asus specs say that the laptop has 8GB soldered in, and that you can add a SODIMM as large as 8GB, for 16GB total.

However Crucial offers a 16GB SODIMM, which would give you 24GB. Crucial guarantees compatibility.

Are you game for trying the 16GB SODIMM?

I haven't heard of 24GB RAM configuration until now. It's either 4. 8. 16, 32, 64. 128 or 256 configuration. RAM stick modules should be matched between slots for best performance. 24GB may be possible but could be useless in achieving more performance. RAM compatibility may not be an issue. But it may affect your laptop's stability. Stay with 16GB.

I have an ASUS laptop. It came with 8 GB ram. 4GB soldered and 4GB in slot. Crucial showed it would support 12 GB ram so I bought an 8GB module to upgrade to 12 GB. The iGPU takes 2GB so leaves 10 GB. Ram shows it still runs in dual channel mode.

According to the ASUS website for the X515JP you can have a total of 12GB or 16GB depending on how much RAM is soldered in on board
4GB DDR4 on board + 4GB DDR4 SO-DIMM = 8GB Total
4GB DDR4 on board + 8GB DDR4 SO-DIMM = 12GB Total Maximum supported
8GB DDR4 on board + 4GB DDR4 SO-DIMM = 12GB Total
8GB DDR4 on board + 8GB DDR4 SO-DIMM = 16GB Total Maximum supported

Since you said you currently have 8GB then you must have: 4GB DDR4 on board + 4GB DDR4 SO-DIMM = 8GB Total

However, sites like Crucial say otherwise. You could be safe and try to add 8GB bringing the total to 12GB.
Or, you try what Crucial suggests and add 16GB bringing the total to 20GB.

Some systems that have mismatched DIMM sizes can run dual channel for twice the memory of the smaller stick. I have no idea whether this laptop can do that.

I think I'd stay with 16GB, for dual channel. 16GB total is pretty good. I'm slightly disturbed by how Asus and Crucial disagree.

Sometimes I make the error of posting what's possible, rather than what makes the most sense.

I am sure 24GB will somehow work and compatibilty is not gonna be an issue. But by convention, it is not a recommended configuration. It may have worked on others laptop, but it may not be the same case for everyone.
