Latest Windows 11 update - cancels vivetool small taskbar setting

Windows 11 updated to latest updates.

Now the taskbar is back to standard size and the vivetool or Registry setting makes no effect to have the small taskbar back.

Any ideas or tips ?

Is this the update that was installed KB5028254 ?

You can check by going to Settings / Windows Update / scroll down to Update History.

Unfortunately, MS doesn't want us to have small Taskbar icons.

It may be a case of waiting a while, Microsoft have a long history of removing options for display settings that do not fit into their corporate "scheme d'jour (today's plan). Not unsurprisingly those who like to modify the look and feel of windows to suit their needs or just preference have just as long a history of finding new ways to get around Microsoft's blocks

Agreed. MS, via uproarious feedback, or 3rd party tweakers, will find a solution.
Every few days I try googling something like: Windows 11 small Taskbar icons - August 2023


Which will be much more effective tomorrow, I would think.

The update which appears to have cancelled Vivetool and ignored the registry setting.

I would uninstall that KB and restart your PC/notebook. IF offered again
it will be as a Preview update. Do not click on the Download & Install button.
Download this little helper from MS. I've been using it for years now.


Watch the video (3 minutes) to see how it works . It's very simple.

I would also caution against downloading Preview updates . They will
be offered again as a regular update in the next month's updates.
They happen on the second Tuesday of every month.
I would also ask that you postpone the updates for 7 days. You can do this
from the Settings / Windows Updates / Pause.

Visit this site to see if any of those updates affect in anyway the OS or maybe
changes that will be part of these new updates. This will give you the chance
to evaluate the consequences and maybe, you could be able to avoid them.

The only way I know that works is this app (below) that will help you change the size of your task bar and other
little options. To be frank, I haven't installed the latest updates (August) to see if this still works but, hold
on, on installing it and when I do install the latest updates I will report back and tell you if it still works.
The free version might not have all of the options available. It's $5.00 US. to purchase.

Can confirm. It's still the way I set it up. Task bar and all other settings still the same.

I have Windows Build 22621.2134 and StartAllBack v3.6.11 and I have the smalll taskbar setting 'S'. I can confirm that this does work and the taskbar has small icons.

That's basically a new launcher with a new skin. I think the people in the thread are trying to do it without any additional software. Granted, StartAllBack and Start11 are great options if you want to customize your start menu & taskbar.

Joking aside, until such time as when MS stops us from trying to
simply have an OS that suites our needs , we will have to compromise
somehow

More than likely the version of Vivetool you're using has not yet been updated by its developer to work with 23h2. The same goes for the other 3rd party apps that alter the GUI. Their developers have to issue updates that will work with whatever changes MS makes to Windows GUI through updates.

Hey Glasskuter.
I would not have mentioned StartAllBack if his/her version of Windows was 23H2.
Mine is 22H2 as is his/hers and our apps have been updated last week to most likely
counter the latest updates. I just wish that MS would just stop trying to figure out ways
to hamper our OS'. Just give us what everyone wants already and keep your hands
off our systems. It is getting frustrating to see all having to scramble to get their OSs back
to what they really like.
