Or use Ventoy to fill your 16gb drive with Windows 11 retail ISO and a Windows 11 Insider ISO, and make Ventoy add the registry tweaks. I used this option.

My problem with that workaround is that it is not applicable when Windows Update is applying a feature update. In the Beta and Dev Insider channels that can be a weekly occurrence.

I never managed to get on with Rufus although it's probably me.

I used this method and it's still working fine with updates etc - go here

That didn't work for me. I then tried Rufus and that worked.

Rufus patches the Registry beforehand. You can also do it manually, when in first Setup screen press SHIFT+F10 to open a Command Prompt. Then run the command regedit to open Registry Editor. Hack the Registry as described below:

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup in the Registry Editor window.
Right-click on Setup and select New > Key.
Name it LabConfig and press the Enter-key.
Right-click on the new LabConfig key and select New > Dword (32-bit) Value.
Name it BypassTPMCheck.
Set its value to 1.
To disable the Secure Boot Check:
Right-click on LabConfig and select New > Dword (32-bit) Value.
Name it BypassSecureBootCheck.
Set its value to 1.
To bypass the RAM check:
Right-click on LabConfig and select New > Dword (32-bit) Value.
Name it BypassRAMCheck.
Set its value to 1.
Close the Registry Editor window.
Type exit in the command prompt window and press the Enter-key.

Needless to say that the Registry hack or the Rufus method apply only for clean installations when you boot with the Windows 11 USB. To upgrade from Windows 10 or earlier Windows 11 version use the appraiserres.dll method.

Ashwin's blog says that Rufus Beta 2 disables TPM, Secure Boot and RAM requirements for Windows 11. But what about disabling the CPU requirement? Is that disabled too?

Yes :) One of the pc on which I installed windows 11 using rufus. Of course, Rufus is suitable for situations where a clean installation is performed. Just like spapakons mentioned above.

Something is really odd with Windows Update today on my 3rd gen i7 Laptop Windows 11 22H2 is being offered. I go through the update but as expected it fails. So either the check is faulty or the installer needs to be updated to remove the old hardware checks

Try to stop Windows Update service (search for Services), then open This PC, right-click on the disk, select Properties and Cleanup. Select to also clean Windows System components and make sure you select to delete any Windows Update related data. Restart your PC, start Windows Update service again, if not started already, and check for updates again. As a last resort take a note of the update that fails and download it manually from Microsoft Update Catalog. I also run Windows 11 on a 3rd generation Intel Core-i7 3770 without TPM without Secure Boot and at Legacy BIOS mode (see 2nd system specs). So far no update has failed or tried to check for hardware compatibility. I used the hybrid USB method to install Windows 11.

Issue is the update is offered but cannot install, so either Windows Update is allowing anyone to download, and the installer still does the hardware checks, and therefore fails. So essentially even though it's offered it cannot be installed via Windows Update and needs hacks to work

Please run the Windows Update troubleshooter at Settings>System>Troubleshoot> Other Troublershooters and then try and install the update and you might succeed.

Yes it can, with the help of a workaround. After the failed hardware check Windows Update shows a failed update with a Retry button. Now is the time to replace the appraserres.dll with a dummy zero bytes file. Then when you click Retry in Windows Update it will skip the checks and successfully update.

I've done that for the last four feature updates on my unsupported install of 22H2.

I still get updates on everyone of my "unsupported hardware computers ! Still the best & easiest way to fix that problem, no problem on any of them !

I was too, until yesterday when my unsupported "vanilla" W11 machine failed the offer to go to 22H2....

What, my 2010 Dell E6410? :wink:

I have 4 machines, ranging from 2010 to 2019. The 2019 is the only one that passes vanilla compatibility.... They all still function quite well though, beyond the $%^#^ compatibility check.

Personally, and this is just my opinion I have always been against using win 11 on a machine that is not up to it, as 10 works fine. If they are working well then fine but I am sure MS will eventually stop them updating if the don't meet the requirements, I also have 4 machines, this one my best laptop. the household one and my test machine all fine and 11 compatible and one that isn't so that was put back on 10. we all have our opinions, there is no right or wrong

Yes, I think that’s going to continue be a real problem for windows updates. They are moving toward ensuring secure portion of win 11, I believe. That’s going to be a real issue for work-arounds.
