Sometime within the past two weeks, my computer began using the new Aptos fonts, which I liked.

I noticed yesterday, Saturday, January 27, 2024, that my default fonts have reverted back to Calibri. I did not take any active measures to cause this.

The only thing I can think of is that my computer underwent an update four days ago on Wednesday, January 24, 2024: "2024-01 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034204)."

Was this update the likely cause of the font reversion?

I expect that the fonts will update once again back to Aptos. So I am not too fussed. I am curious, however.

If anyone has any thoughts on what happened, I would be appreciative.

If you are referring to your system font, here's how I did it. If you want to use one of the new cloud fonts as your system font, you have to first install the font from the cloudfonts folder. Instructions here.
Make Cloud Fonts available to all programs, not just Office

You then use this tutorial to replace the default system font to the font of your choice. Change Default System Font in Windows 11 Tutorial
Recently I changed my system font to the cloudfont Roboto and am liking it so far. It has survived many reboots and never reverted.

Now if you are talking about Aptos in Word, once the font is installed in Windows, the font will be available in Word's list of fonts. Make it your default font...

A few days ago, I had the Aptos font as my default font. It affected Word, Outlook, and Excel. Those the programs I use most frequently, and I noticed that the default font had changed.

Then yesterday I noticed that my new fonts were gone. I was back to the Calibri font. To the best of my knowledge, I did not do anything that caused a reversion back to Calibri.

Because I had the Aptos font acting as my default font across several Office programs, I do not believe that I need to do something to make it my default. I believe Microsoft is automatically changing my default. In some forums, users are asking how to revert back to Calibri. Change is always hard, I suppose.

Bottom line: My default font changed for reasons I do not know or understand. And I believe that once Microsoft changes the default font, it should stick. I am guessing that my recent update undid my font change.

I appreciate your answer. It may help someone else who wants to change their font to something different.

Aptos arrived yesterday at my Microsoft 365, it is still there today, and I hope it stays. I like Aptos much, much better than the previous Calibri.

Yes, it is a nice change, isn't it.

I suspect yours will stay put. And I expect mine to come back sometime soon.

I have two corporate Microsoft 365 accounts, and I had a large update last week. Perhaps one of those two items conflicted with my then existing Aptos font, and my new default Aptos fonts changed back to Calibri.

Enjoy your new fonts, and I thank you for your comment.

Steyck, the same thing happened to me. Had all default fonts switch to Aptos a couple of weeks ago. Opened Outlook this morning to type and email and Calibri was back.

I too had the 2024-01 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034204) installed on 24 Jan, but the font reversion just happened today. Weird.

@rt587, Well, the good news is that I have company. You have confirmed that it was not something I did.

I like the Aptos fonts. As you mentioned, the difference is noticeable in Outlook. I found the Aptos fonts easier to read.

I have no idea why Aptos fonts changed back to Calibri. I am sure we will get our fonts back soon. When Microsoft starts getting comments and complaints, then I hope it issues a fix.

Thank you for your comment.

Guys, it's so simple to manually change Word's default font to Aptos. But if you want to wait to see if MS does it automatically, OK.
These screenshots show you how.

@glasskuter, thank you for you post.

I am inclined to wait for Microsoft sort this out. Besides I am curious. Given that I have used Calibri for fifteen years or so for all my Office programs, I can wait a bit longer. I expect within a few weeks, Microsoft will sort it out.

@Stecyk @rt587 I'm having the same behavior - Office changed the default font to Aptos about 2-3 weeks ago, and in the last 2-3 days it reverted back to Calibri. Didn't change a thing. I don't do preview updates, so I don't have "2024-01 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034204)" installed. The last update I have is "2024-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H3 for x64-based Systems (KB5034123)", which was installed on January 10 - so I guess it's not the preview update which changed it...
I do wonder why they change it like this with no notification whatsoever.

It is odd behavior, isn't it?

Thank you for letting me know that it is unlikely that my update caused the issues. Like you, I have no clue what triggered Aptos changing back to Calibri. This reversion is not a big deal, though. I am sure it will get sorted out in time.

Thank you for your comment.

Same issue here. Now you see it, now you don't.

I actually upgraded a couple of my Excels to the new theme, wanted to do a couple more, no go.

The new color scheme is gone:

There was an option for Office 2013 - 2022 and then Office was the new one.

@Ten Forward,

That was quick. I am glad to see that at least some people are getting their updated themes back.

I am still using the older theme.

I got my new fonts back two days ago, just after installing a new update: 2024-02 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034848). I have no clue if the update and my fonts are related. I know others have lost and gained fonts without having upgraded recently.

I hope my new fonts stay around awhile.

I just wanted to report that if your fonts do disappear, be patient because they are likely to reappear in the near future.
