Other System Tray Icons

If you Right-click on the taskbar you get the taskbar settings. 2nd from the bottom is Other System Tray Icons. It used to show any programs you previously ran that had a tray icon with a switch to show it or hide it.

That is still somewhat the same, but hardly any of the programs I use show on the list anymore. PopPeeper (email notification program) does show on the list. Other programs like FreeFileSync and Comodo Firewall either show in the tray (or hidden Tray), but not on the list to toggle on or off anymore.

Anyone know why the list with the switches had been limited lately? I do know you can drag and drop tray icons from the taskbar tray to the hidden box, but icons like FreeFileSync may only appear for a second while doing a scheduled sync.

I run release version. All my apps still have On/Off toggle switches in taskbar settings.

Thanks for replying. It must be something I set, but thanks for confirming.

Go into those applications not showing on that list, and toggle off the ability to hide to the system tray, then close the apps, and start them again, then set the ability to hide to system tray again, close app, and restart the app.

Does it now show in the Other apps list?

Also, are you using any sort of cleaning app, like CCLeaner?

I looked at the "Options" in FreeFileSync and didn't see that option. Am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks!

Right click the Taskbar and start the Task Manager. Go to Startup Apps on the left panel. Look for the apps, if it is Disabled, then Enable any of the apps that used to be in the System Tray area of the Taskbar. This will allow the app to start with windows and will run in the background.
If those apps aren't there, then
Open the apps, go to Settings/Preferences/Options etc and look for Start With Windows, Enable that.

Thanks, but I don't want the apps to auto-start with windows. I just want them to show the tray icon when they are running. The list, Other System Tray Icons, used to show every program that you used at some point that had a tray icon, and you had the option of continuing to show it or hide it. I don't remember when, but that changed, maybe 6 months ago (guessing) to where it only shows some of the previously run programs.

As an example, I have CCleaner setup in a Windows task to do an /AUTO clean. When I tested the task (ran it manually) it showed a CCleaner icon on the tray with a sweeping motion. When I tested it again, it didn't show, but I quickly looked in the hidden tray icons and seen it there. If I clicked on Taskbar properties, Other System Tray Icons, I used to see it there and be able to make it show every time the program is run. CCleaner and FreeFileSync are no longer on that list (along with others), so I can't set it to always show, but PopPeeper is. I don't know the new criteria for programs to be on the list.

@glasskuter says their programs all show, so maybe I have something set?

Any app that is running, whether it starts with Windows or not will be in the Taskbar. Those that are started with Windows will be under the Hidden tray icons, you can choose which apps you want to view or hide, by Right clicking the Taskbar/Taskbar Settings/Other System Icons and toggle what you want to see or hide.

Incorrect.

Apps not minimized will (usually) show on taskbar. Some apps minimize to the taskbar only. Other apps minimize to the system notification area (aka system tray) only. Some apps give you an option to pick where the app minimizes to.

But just because an app starts with Windows does not automatically mean it minimized to system tray. The Microsoft To Do app is a perfect example - you can set it to auto start but it still only minimizes to the taskbar, not the System Tray.

And what the OP was asking about is that certain apps he has do not populate in that list to show or hide from the System Tray.

OK, so FreeFile Sync is set to always minimize to the tray. Let me grab it and see if it shows after installing on my Other system tray icons.

@Hollywood - I don't even see a way to make FFS use the system tray at all. But, I did donate $5 and get the donation version.

Does your FFS version have a way to put FFS into the system tray? Because that list you look at is for apps that can appear in the system tray, not a way to make any app appear in the system tray.

when you make a "job" you can save it so you can open it at another time. you can also save it as a "batch file" and if you do, there is a choice to Run Minimized so that a window does not appear when run, but there is a tray icon so you can see it is running and stop it or maximize it. I hope I explained that ok?

In the Task Scheduler I still have to specify FreeFileSync (the program) and the batch file as the Argument, and when it runs, it does indeed run minimized, but the first time the tray icon was visible and the next time it was in the hidden tray icons, BUT there is no entry in Other System Tray Icons, so there is no switch to choose how you want it. So FFS and CCleaner behave the same.

CryptSync (a GREAT program) can also sync folders with or without encryption like FFS, but in real time. When minimized it also resides in the Tray, but it is not just for a second or so like the other 2 programs, it is there while the program is active. Like FFS and CCleaner, it also does NOT have an entry in Other System Tray Icons, but I can drag and drop it from the tray to the hidden tray (and back).

My FreeFileSync is triggered by RealTimeSync which will always show in the tray if selected. I haven't found a way for FreeTimeSync to stay permanently visible.

FreeTimeSync running temporarily visible/FreeFileSync always running, always visable.

I also use Task Scheduling for the syncing, but I use RealFileSync, as mentioned, in Task Scheduler to trigger FreeFileSync (Also would work by just placing RealTimeSync in the windows start folder, but I prefer Task Scheduling)

I assume you mean FreeFILEsync as shown on your screen shot. Anyway, as on your screen, you have the option. That is what I am asking about. I don't have that listed like you do. I am using ExplorerPatcher, but I don't think that is the issue, (but maybe?). I do have one of my apps on the list, but not others. Thanks for posting, you confirmed it my be my install, and not a Windows issue.

It’s something in my broken brain, if one was to look, I do that all the time, I’ve even called it FreeStyleSync in here.

It’s odd you don’t have it listed. Have you tried backing up your Explorer patcher settings (if you can) and removing it, see if it’s back after a reboot?

Just tried it. After removing EP and rebooting, 5 programs I previously used (that didn't show up before) showed on the list. Ironically, FreeStyleFileSync or CCleaner wasn't one of them though. After reinstalling EP, the same 5 programs still showed up. So I guess EP is at least part of the problem.

In the past, some programs did not show on the list until you used them several times, so that might be part of it as this is a new install. Also after uninstalling, running CCleaner (clean and registry clean), rebooting, and reinstalling EP, EP kept my settings.

Thanks for not letting me be lazy and try this!

Do you have a user account and an admin account, did you install from one account and are you using a different account expecting to see these tray icons?

I’m curious, in your scheduled task for FreeForAllSync, which of the following is it set to?:

- Run whether user is logged on or not
- Run only when user is logged on

Try switching that setting, see if anything happens. Nothing else has worked to date so no harm in trying. Reboots will be required, of course.

I just tested with CCleaner as it runs faster. It is set to only when user is logged on, highest privileges. Running the task manually that icon did appear when it was running. I rebooted, but CCleaner is still not on the list. Previously FFS also shows the icon while running, but is not on the list.

Hmmm
Another far reaching thought. In the past, strangely for some reason the settings in the startup section of CCleaner have been different to the startup settings in Windows Settings.
Because you have a Schedule running, FreeFoodSync will run regardless, but is it set to not run at startup in any of the settings anywhere?

re the previous suggestion. I did read that FreeFileSync wouldn’t show in the task bar for someone because of the schedule settings. To rule it out, I would also try the setting switch with FFS

Have you posted this issue in the FFS forum?
