Hi,
My PC is the following:

Asus Prime B450M-A
AMD Ryzen 5 3600
Radeon RX 5500XT
16GB DDR4 - Corsair Vengeance LPX 2 x 8GB 3200Mhz
Various Disks

This is all working well but I need more memory so I ordered 2 x 16GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200Mhz

I've removed the 2 x 8GB ram and installed the 2 x16GB in the same slots.
Booted the PC and it showed 32GB DDR4 3200Mhz

Then it blue screened.. It boots backup and does it again.
I've removed and re seated the RAM. Windows 11 boots and then blue screens.
It happens so fast I don't get a chance to see the error.

I've removed the 2 x 16GB and refitted the 2 x 8GB, and now it's working and seems stable.

When it did boot I checked the BIOS and it shows 32GB.
I've not changed anything in the BIOS.

I've got a screenshot of how it was set with 16GB:
Ai Overclock Tuner was set as: D.O.C.P
D.O.C.P was set as: D.O.C.P DDR4-3200 16-18-18-36

I think with the new ram this changes to 16-20-20-?? something.

I can see some entries in the Event View showing as:
Kernel-Power Event ID 41 Task 63 error

Any suggestion on what to look for and how to resolve this ?
Thanks

You could start by turning off DOCP, and seeing whether you can boot to Windows using the default RAM frequency. (2133MHz, maybe?)

Is the RAM on the QVL (qualified vendors list) for the motherboard? (The 3600 is from the third generation.)

You may be able to get it running by manually backing off the frequency a little.

Good luck.

The ram doesn't appear on that list.

This is the existing 8 x 8GB

This is the new 2 x 16GB

Would I be better returning it and buying something else ?

Instead of just guessing what the correct ram would be, I'd take a different route. And, be less likely to fail.

I'd go to the "Crucial.com" website, and download their Memory Scanner program and run it. It will then tell you what ram you can use on that PC, and if you so desire, you could order the correct ram right there from their web site.
I've done that many times for my customers, while being logged in to my customer's PC's.
And, I've never had Crucial suggest any ram that did not work, 100%.
It's all I will ever use!
Good Luck,
TM

Sometimes with some RAM DOCP won't work properly.
I had a similar issue on my motherboard with RAM that WAS on the QVL list.

The trick is turn DOCP off and set the RAM to manufacturer's specs... manually.

Assuming both sticks of RAM are good... then generally, this is how you do it...

Image1.png

The specs in the RED box, are what the RAM is actually running at. The specs in the BLUE box will be the manufacturer's specs.

You need to write the Manufacturer's specs down on a piece of paper, then go into the BIOS and (with DOCP off), manually set your RAM to match.

In MY BIOS... this is where I would set the RAM timings.
As you can see, I set my timings as shown in CPU-Z. But it still didn't boot.

The DRAM RAS# Pre Time (not shown in CPU-Z), was the problem. It was still on auto... so I "guessed" what to set it at... then everything worked like a champ. :-)

Of course you have to set the frequency and voltage, first... then do the timings.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
I'm not going to be able to run CPU-Z, as the PC crashes before get a chance to download it when the 32GB is installed.

I've tried the crucial scanner with the 16GB in, it downloads and when I run the exe it opens a web page but nothing happens.

Does anyone know what the correct memory I need is ?
Thanks

You could just go with Crucial. (The fastest offered is 3200 MHz.) They guarantee compatibility. The obvious downside is its latency isn't great (CL22).

There are better specs available in the QVL. The tedious part will be checking what kits are still available. I will not do that for you. Looking at Gskill (one of my favorite makers), the fastest 2 X16MB kit they list at the moment is 2666 MHz, with latency that is unspectacular.

In the BIOS try to temporarily disable DOCP so the RAM runs at the default 2133MHz. See if the computer runs without crashing.

I had a similar dilemma. I wanted to upgrade my RAM from 16GB (2x8GB) 2666MHz to 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz. I didn't know which RAM to get so I selected some that was supposed to be optimized for Ryzen CPUs. I am glad I did because it runs fine using D.O.C.P. and the rated 3200MHz. Note the RAM I chose was not on the QVL list.

Note I have a similar CPU but my motherboard is even older being a 1st generation Ryzen.

I've checked in my BIOS and the existing 8GB memory shows as Corsair 8192MB 2133Mhz, yet windows and other areas of the BIOS report it as 3200Mhz. Why ?

This is what CPU-Z shows for the original memory.

I know you want to run at 3200MHz but for testing purposes try them at 2133MHz. We have different motherboards but in the BIOS look for Memory Frequency. You should be able to set it at 2133MHz.

Have you considered trying the GSKill Flair X RAM 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz like I have? It is not on any QVL list. However, it is supposed to be for AMD Ryzen so there is a better chance than most of working.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions.
I use the PC for work so I'm a little apprehensive messing with it to much, but I plan on trying this tonight and see how I get on.

I tested this last night and still got blue screen. Single module, dual modules all at 2133Mhz.
It was bought via Amazon so I'm arranging a return.

If I was to add 2 more 8GB the same as I already have, should they just plug in and work ?
Thanks

I've been in touch with the company I purchased the original components from and they have confirmed the memory I need and that it can be fitted without any changes needed in the BIOS.

So I've ordered 2 additional 8GB DDR4 ram and will see what happens when that arrives !

Thanks

If manufacturer's specs don't work, try increasing the latency.

The new memory arrived. 2x8GB DDR4 3200 MHz
With this fitted alongside my existing ram the PC fails to boot.
The case fans spin up, but the fans on the video card don't and the pc doesn't even POST.

Remove the new chips and all works again.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Was the new RAM exactly the same as the old ones? If so maybe that particular RAM is incompatible with your computer. Maybe you should have tried different RAM entirely.

Like I said I replaced my Corsair Vengeance RAM with GSkill RAM. The new GSkill RAM works great.
