Nope. Won't get Text or Bitmap. No ShellNew keys in 11's registry. Gets other junk, though.

It can't work in 11, because it works on ShellNew keys, and there ain't none in the 11 registry. I think I used ShellNewHandler from WinAero to kill a couple of things, but they weren't Store app entries. Bmp and Txt are tied to store apps and have no ShellNew entries.

@Wisewiz @Try3 My mistake, I have just tried it and only a couple of things work with it, I must have changed them in Win 10 before I upgraded. Denis I would go with what @Wisewiz has posted, I am going to try that too

Unless, perhaps, you've installed a 3rd party app as default handler.

In which case, delete the ShellNew key or the NullFile string...

i set photoshop to handle .bmp files but no luck. i removed shellnew. and .bmp is still there...

.bmp .txt can't be removed .ps1 can't be added

Can confirm, when notepad and paint is removed. you can remove .txt and .bmp from there. they are modern app UWP entries. just like new context menu they cannot be edited. you need to add/remove component to remove the entry. i think also shortcut can't be removed too. soo its .txt .bmp and also shortcut

But still not being able to add .ps1 bothers me.

Have you tried Easy Context Menu? It’s widely used here, and I’ve been very impressed with it.

they don't work since its UWP related. context menu editors etc won't work if its part of NEW UI. ofc we tried everyone tried those tools.

@Brink i found solution. probably only solution. will try to create a script to automate this.

To remove .txt and .bmp from Create>New Context Menu without removing notepad and paint components from windows.

For Paint Open
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.Paint_11.2110.0.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\AppxManifest.xml

For Notepad Open
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.WindowsNotepad_10.2103.7.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\AppxManifest.xml

And remove the line starting with
<uap:FileType uap4:ShellNewFileName=

You are going to need permisions to achieve this, i suggest using softwares like nsudo.

Ah, they moved the setting to the XML file instead of registry since those are Store apps now.

This will most likely get reset each time there's a new app version released.

I will try to create a script where the version name is a wildcard. but as with every update of windows or modernapp itself. you may need to rerun the script. or add it to windows startup.

also to add .ps1 extension or any extension that can't be added u will need a uwp app to link to. like these were. maybe powershell 7 from microsoft store and its appxmanifest file can be edited to add .ps1.

But there's no good reason to Take Ownership of a System File like WindowsApps. That might cause, well, a lot of headaches.
