Rumor: Windows roadmap for 2024

So, basically, MS is telling us "Don't worry, we got lots of confusion coming for y'all in 2024"

I like this. Windows has always been too complicated and cumbersome to use, hence the need for forums like this one to exist. One should interact with the OS via natural language. No configuration windows with lots of options, no cascading menus, no commands. I hope AI will move in this directions.

A major update once a year.... smaller updates every few months. Great joy will still continue on the Windows 12 forum.

User: "I tried the new suggestions, but I still can't update my unsupported pc to Hudson Valley. Any other suggestions."

Personally I prefer the old once a year major release schedule. All this "will they or won't they" with MS is confusing and causes issue for too many people. I predict MS is going to clamp down hard on running 12 on unsupported hardware. For those who do, I hope I'm wrong, but we got our first warning of what was to come way back in 2021. Even though the door has been open up until now, I think MS will permanently close it.

I think it possible MS will cutoff older computers from the next gen of Windows, but will they cutoff more gens of CPUs as well such as the Intel 8th through say 11th gens for lack of AI abilities. Or will they be modular in approach and what your machine will run in the next gen Windows is what you get. This latter approach would be more in keeping with Microsoft wanting to get more people on the same page (Windows version) as opposed to the separation spoken of where 400 million are on one OS, and another 1 billion on another. Could even be "cost cutting" for Microsoft to be more flexible or modular.

Time will tell.

I think it is unlikely that they will increase hardware requirements for the next generation release; the take up of Windows 11 was a lot less than hoped for, mainly because of new hardware requirements. I don't think they will want to repeat that mistake.

I've written elsewhere in these parts that I do not expect Microsoft to cutoff unsupported machines for Windows 11 and I still believe that will not happen though some still fear it. Windows 12 or whatever it may be called could be different. One thing I saw working for what was once the largest corporation in the world is that corporations, out of arrogance, tend to repeat the same mistakes. That is why they usually have both a heyday, and a swan song.

Having two out of three machines that support Windows 11, I really do hope that Microsoft uses good judgment and does not cutoff more CPU generations; but I won't hold my breath.
