System tray not working properly

Yes Fabler but I don't have the audio symbol on the taskbar on my main desktop or I would.
Your image shows it?
Doesn't matter as Win key +A brings it up.

Ok Fabler mate I will try that but frankly I have had the system tray nonsense and if t doesn't work properly then I shall just learn to live without it.

Ok Charmaine K I shall give that a go as frankly I had given up and just between you and I - I am sick to death of the convoluted ways that features put into the OS for example the ways that they (MS) gather data about you and you think you have plugged all the avenues of data gathering when you find another setting that takes over and the way that updates will replace your changes eh?

It may be that it's just something that is broken in Windows itself... not just "your" Windows.
It seems my system won't do it either. Macrium is listed in the System Tray list on settings... but toggling it on, and restarting Explorer doesn't work. I'm guessing it's a built in Windows problem.

Maybe just make it a regular Taskbar icon?

Another possibility is to check the settings IN Samsung Magician.
Some programs have their own setting to create a System Tray icon.
My Macrium taskbar icon only appears when I do a manual backup from the Macrium shortcut. I double click it to see the progressUI. It doesn't show when I run the main Macrium program.

Definitely a WIN11 bug. It is full of bugs. I fix one thing and another thing stops working properly. I have reset/reformatted several times since the initial WIN11 upgrade from WIN10 last Oct after being told the issue was on my end. It isn't. Same issues even after factory reset and installing WIN11 many times different methods. Months later I finally have my laptop functioning how it should with a few extra scripts and workarounds to keep the system running smooth.

You DO know that sliding them ON only means that IF they're running, they park a visible icon in the tray, don't you?

When I run my MR images shortcuts, the Macrium icon shows up in the tray at the very left end. When Macrium finishes, the icon's gone, baby, gone.

I think the idea of the sliders for the tray is to keep them either in or out of the box with the up-caret.

I think it's just another broken MS setting.
It says: "Show or Hide System Tray icons".

But I think you're right. I have TranslucentTB and EVGA Precision X1 under the arrow.
But when I toggle them ON, they appear in the Sys Tray and not under the arrow.
And they do run in the background.

So it seems that the only icons that can appear in the Sys Tray or under the arrow, must be for "running" applications.

Yes Ghot mate you're right about the system being broken and I wonder if it ever was ok since install the system - from what I have seen in other threads and videos' the OS is still full of bugs and yet they are hinting at Windows 12 in some quarters - heaven help us!!

That last sentence is exactly right, but there's nothing broken about this part of the system (IMHO).

The tray shows the icons for running programs, if and only if (IFF) those programs are designed to throw an icon into the systray when they're running. Some are; some aren't. Some have tray icon options; some don't. A small number are always there, because they're always running.

The "Show or hide system tray icons" sliders are provided to give users a choice: If a program throws a systray icon when it's running, the user can choose to have that icon show in the tray or be hidden inside the caret (^) bubble. (It's not a carrot, guys! ) Dragging an icon out of the bubble to the tray works, but only so long as the icon's program is running. That action resets a slider in "Show or hide."

If you find the caret annoying, as I do, you set all the sliders to ON. Then the only time you'll see a systray icon is when its program is running, and the only time you'll see the caret is when a program that wasn't in the "Show or hide" set when you moved the sliders is run. Then you can go to "Show or hide" and you'll find that program's name (newly) in the panel, and you can move the slider to ON to get rid of the caret, or you can save yourself the bother and drag the icon out of the bubble to the tray and the caret disappears AND the name of the program will be added to the "Show or hide" panel with the slider for that program ON.

That's what I know about the setting, but it really IS NOT BROKEN. It works exactly as it was designed to work, and only that way.

Amen.

The tray shows the icons for running programs, if and only if (IFF) those programs are designed to throw an icon into the systray when they're running.
Well I have to disagree Wisewiz mate my main desktop used to have a pop up tray that had several icons in it and I know that most were running processes and as they were I liked it because they were hidden until one clicked on the ^ on the taskbar it suited me fine. Now I am left with the odd icon on the taskbar anyway and the ^ is all but useless.

Hey, mate, do me a favor: In Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Other System Tray Icons, make SURE the Hidden Icon Menu is ON.

Then, just for the heck of it, slide all of the sliders listed there OFF just for a little while. Now start a few of the programs listed in the sliders list, leaving the sliders OFF.

Your pop-up tray (it's got round corners and is more like a bubble in W11) with several icons in it, all from running processes, is hidden until you click on the ^, and there'll be the odd icon in the tray always, for things like Defender (if you use it), another Anti-V (if you use one), any app that you keep running in the background all the time (like my keyboard manager), a network icon, and a sound icon.

I think that's exactly what you described that you used to have on your main desktop.

Now, ordinarily, if I had the Hidden icon menu OFF, and ran some of the programs in the sliders list, my tray would change from this

to THIS:

When your settings are the way I asked you to set them (and NOT the way I have my settings for the bottom two shots), and you're running several programs, as I asked you to, the caret is far from all but useless. It's a mighty handy tool.

You might want to go back and re-set your settings the way you want them after you see this stuff.

It's all okay, mate. Disagreement is healthy. But I think maybe what we have between us is just a little misunderstanding about what the taskbar settings do or don't do.

You've got the sliders all ON. If you want them to use the popup tray and the caret, you have to slide them OFF. That's what the little line of text says that's right under the words Hidden icon menu.

But leave the Hidden icon Menu slider ON.

Now run some of the programs that you have sliders OFF for, and minimize their windows.

You'll have the popup and the caret, and the caret will be functional.
