What happens after September 15th 2022?

I know the Dev build I am on will stop working, but will Dev be halted for a while until there is a new branch?
Will I have to go back to 22H2 stable and wait for this? It will suck to have to clean install a nicely working installation.

You'll get nagging notifications first to update and it'll most probably auto update anyway unless you disable WU.

Dev is always ahead of current RTM. At some point Beta might catch up and you can transfer to it but not before 22H2 RTM is released in next few weeks or so.

However, in reality, it could be upto a year away.

Dev will always get updated before the expiry date. Expiry only happens if you do not update which rather defeats purpose of being on Dev version.

So, I guess I'm good to go, then. I never disable updates unless troubleshooting.

MS releases new Dev builds almost every week, so you don't have to worry about your Dev builds expiring.

The usual practice seems to be that a new branch with a new expiry date starts shortly before the current one expires.

I'm guessing that the September 2022 date was chosen to align with the date Microsoft hope to have 22H2 ready for its public release.

One safe solution if you are worried about this --- Have a version of the std W11 version too --- If you use physical vhdx files it's simple to keep two or more installs (all activated) -- then if there's any problem simply switch to the std version until a new dev or whatever build comes out.

I prefer this method as opposed to the "classical" method of having an original backup of your system before going down the Dev route since if you restore that you may well miss important security updates, plus things you've installed together with their updates etc.
