Is there a difference in the apps if i download the exe file from the website (iTunes, VLC etc) and installing them Vs installing them through the Microsoft Store?

I remember when i had iTunes installed via the exe updates took ages. Now when there is an update through the Microsoft Store it is done in seconds.

Also asking because i noticed that my VLC was saying up to date when i manually checked for updates, but when i visited the website there was a newer version out.

Is there any difference in the application if i download it from the Microsoft Store instead of downloading from the developer's website?

Thanks

Application going thru the store have different requirements and therefore will have different update/release dates.
No need to go into too much detail but the app itself is the same, it is the way it is installed that changes, let's say in a more 'contained' manner.

VLC has never released an official Store app, all those are from outsiders not linked to VideoLAN.
You should install the Official download of VLC media player, the best Open Source player - VideoLAN

There are two kinds of Store apps: UWP apps written in the W10 "Modern UI" framework, and plain Win32 apps repackaged for Store.

iTunes is available in both normal Win32 (Apple) and UWP formats (Store). The only difference is the Store app uses Windows Update to upgrade, and the normal iTunes uses Apple's own software updater. They live in different folders, as function of their app type.

Otherwise, its the same software.

I would prefer to play safe and install latest application version directly from manufacturer, not from Windows Store. Probably some applications are the same, but others are different with the Store version having fewer features. Compare the desktop version vs the Store version of Skype, OneDrive, limited Store version of Internet Explorer in Windows 8 vs the fully featured desktop version etc. No thanks I prefer the traditional desktop version with maximum features and having to manually update it over the limited Store version and the "convenience" of automatic updates.
Regarding iTunes, the Store version lacks some components and when trying to use the 3uTools to access an IPhone I had to install them to proceed. Installing the traditional desktop version includes these components. So they may seem similar but the desktop version is fully featured.
