Getting rid of Bing search engine in Edge

I use Edge as my search browser and am annoyed that when opening a new tab it brings up the Bing search engine. Anyone got any ideas on how to stop this as I have tried Settings in general and in Edge settings but am not having much luck in finding a fix for this - maybe a registry tweak perhaps?.
Any help would be really appreciated as I would rather stick with Edge but if I have to I shall default Google Chrome as my browser preference.

You can't.
Just bookmark google.com and Ctrl/Shift/click to open it in a new tab.

Ok Edwin I shall just have to try Google Chrome as my default browser - thanks for the heads-up

I use Custom New Tab extension if you want to land on a blank page or the page of your choice.

Within every browser, there is some Search Engine, by default.
They are two different entities. While setting up Edge, for my own use, I specify my own choice of a Home Page.
And, I use the private Search Engine "Startpage.com" for my Home Page and for my Search Engine.
I do the same thing in Firefox.
Google is not safe! Startpage is! Give it a try.

Never heard of Startpage till now so I went to startpage.com and did a search on "startpage vs google" (without quotes) and there were ZERO results but when I searched for "startpage vs google" (with and without the quotes) on Google I got 8,860 results with the quotes and over 12 million without the quotes.

I just let the search engine to pick the proper search engines.

Hello Techno mate I have never heard of Startpage.com eihter and I thought Google Chrome was as safe as any other browser there is. Still I shall have a look at the Startpage option and see, As for Google Chrome it is certainly less of a resources hog than Edge taking about a tenth of what Edge did well according to my task manager.

Edge is totally customisable to get rid of the in-your-face MS cr4p.

Open Edge > top RH cornet, click the "bell" (News) symbol > Now, there is an option to turn it off in one hit but when you do this, it just fades out all the sub-options. Given MS is known for its underhanded tactics, I'm always suspicious whether that fading means those sub-options are off or still available (real tin-foil hat, me). So, instead of just turning off the main switch, I start from the bottom of the list and turn off every individual option before I turn off the main switch. (See, I told you we're in tin-foil hat territory here ....)

I go through the Quick Links icons under the search bar in the middle of the screen (those commercial interests that Microsoft has prostituted itself to display at the expense of annoying users). Mouse over will show the ... symbol, one option of which will be to rid the screen of these commercial eye-pollution.

Next, the cog wheel in the top RH corner and go through all the settings turning every one of them off (or whatever the options offer)

Next, general/overall Settings option (... in top far RH corner) > Privacy, search and services > Address bar and search (note how MS "hide" this option right at the very end, off the screen, out of sight .... > make your preferred changes

Next, > Start, Home and New tabs
When Edge starts > Open these pages > set the opening page to about:blank
Home > set and Save to about:blank
New tab page > Customise (just check the settings you made earlier with the bell symbol have stuck. Wouldn't trust MS as far as I could kick 'em not to sneak a reset to default as a result of Settings changes

Is it worth this effort? Not in the slightest, especially when you consider MS's total disregard for the user's preferences when you do a search from the Desktop search bar - you get a Bing search in Edge no matter what your Edge search preference is, or what your default browser is set to. Also, MS is wont to reset some settings at a whim and disregard the users audacity to even consider they may want something different to what MS thinks it knows every user likes, so must have.

Which is why I've consigned Edge and Bing to the waste bin of oblivion (outta sight, outta mind), use multiple other browser options (Brave, Opera, Firefox ... note that invasive abomination G**gle Chrome is missing from this list), DuckDuckGo as the search engine (with DDGo Privacy Essentials addon/extension) and hide the Desktop search bar, I mean. how hard is it to open a browser and do the search directly ... one whole arduous time consuming extra click. Wow. (note : = sarcasm)

Yes idgat mate I set Chrome as my default browser but Edge still manages to wiggle it's way back in when doing various searches. I wouldn't mind using Edge if it was not so bloated with things like that Bing search thingy. Plus according to my task manager tells me that Edge hogs about 14% of resources where Chrome is 1 tenth of the resource use of Edge. But apart from uninstalling Edge completely if that is possible I guess we are left with the never ending annoyance of the Microsoft browser.

Simply don't search from the toolbar/taskbar/start menu/desktop. Open your preferred browser and search from that, using the preferred setting search engine.

Ok mate will give that a whirl.

There is an extension that will default to google each time you open a new tab. Works well. Not at pc at moment but it is easy enough to find by searching for extensions.

If you insist on using Edge..., forget the +Tab button, forget extensions, forget 3rd party utilities!
Just Ctrl/Shift/click Google to open in a foreground tab! It ain't rocket science, folks!



Hell..., you could even program a mouse button to do so!

But that does not change search engine In new tabs if you enter search from the top bar.

That is what OP is posting about.

The ONLY way to do this is via an extension.

New Tab Redirect is also an excellent extension for this.

Or you can turn off the web search settings for desktop search so it only looks at stuff on your computer itself....
