I've been waiting for the 25309 update to check out the new volume mixer... I get frequent updates, but I am way back in the 24xxx builds (actually 23481). Is there any way I can force update to the build I am waiting for? Thanks for the help.

Sounds like you have been caught out by the MS reboot of the Insider channels. In March a new Canary channel was added, and the rebooted Dev channel switched to 23xxx series of builds. If you want the 25xxx series of builds, the latest of which is now Insider Canary Build 25393.1 then you need to check your Insider settings and make sure you are on the Canary channel.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Beta as native boot vhdx.

Ah ok... yes, I didn't know about this... thanks for the info.

Is the canary channel prone to a lot of problems? If I switch to canary to get the features I want, can I then drop back to the "dev" channel and just wait for it to catch up with the canary build?

IMHO Canary or Dev aren't a good choice for a PC used day to day. I would only use them on a virtual machine or a spare test PC.

I strongly recommend you stick to Dev and no, once in Canary, you can't switch as they are different branches.

I think the reason MS have done this is walking back a Windows version is usually a messy affair.

Well, in the past you didn't have to walk back. For instance... I was in the dev channel and went to beta and it just stayed at the build I was on until beta went past that build.
