Reminds me of the story of the Scotsman whose dying wish, to a close friend, was that once a year, on his deathday, the friend would pour a bottle of really good scotch over his grave. ....

Ah lad, wouldja be mindin' if I strained it through me kidneys first?

I've used this new build to make an image, a file backup, a revised boot menu (tested and works perfectly), and a new Rescue USB (tested and works perfectly). I think this build is solid.

Thanks for reporting your results. All I have done so far is make rescue media but have not yet tested it.

Welcome. I've developed the habit of restarting as soon as the creation of the USB finishes, then hitting my key for select boot order, choosing the USB, and then making sure the MR PE window is right when it appears. Only takes a very few minutes, and gives me a kind of peace of mind.

I use a slightly different strategy. I always put the ISO image of the recovery media on a thumbdrive that allows me to boot from a large selection of ISO images. So, until I get a chance to test the new one, I keep the last known good image on that drive as well. Once I get around to testing the new one, then it becomes my "last known good" image.

I discovered something today which has probably been around for ages (probably since recent update showed stages of drivers etc. being loaded in more detail)

People have posted on Macrium forum requests to have option to bypass ethernet network initiation when boot from a rescue drive (or from boot menu option) as that takes a while and majority of us do not actually use ethernet networks for backups.

I noticed with recent updates a message flash up briefly on notification line just after winpeinit stage to press "esc" to stop network loading, and I tried it and "boom" - straight to main screen in about 4 seconds (after 1st screen loads) using boot menu options.

Without pressing "esc", it takes around 20 seconds.

I have to let it install my nvme drivers before pressing "esc" or else drives are not visible - that may not apply to sata only drives but on my main laptop I only have nvme drives needing IRST drivers.

So now I am saving over the tedious 15 seconds to boot up in winre mode (I have not tested winpe but I assume same).

Of course, many of you probably know this, but hey it's not too late to teach an old dog new tricks .

@cereberus Wellsir, there are lots and lots of old dogs here. You and I, for starters, and then, out of politeness, I won't name any more names.

Don't feel too bad about it, I only spotted that trick a month ago. As it turns out, the option to press "Esc" has always been there. In fact, I've tried it with v7 rescue media and it works there too. The only thing that has changed recently is that it now explicitly tells you that "ESC cancels".

The strange thing is nobody on the Macrium Forum mentioned this (posts date back to 2022), so obviously not well known. even by forum regulars.

It is the advent of extra info recently on the installation progress bar (for want of a better term) that caught my eye.

Out of interest, I am presuming the V7 media did not say "ESC cancels", and it would be random chance to discover this "feature"?

All one had to do is to pay attention during start. It was there from start.

No, it doesn't, not for networking at least - even though Esc does work there too. It does briefly say "press 'Esc' to abort" at the very start while initializing Windows PE, but that goes by so fast you'd likely miss seeing it.

To get these fixes (marked in yellow), you'll need to rebuild the bootable Rescue Media...

Yeah it is the networking part that takes the time, and now that has the esc message as well, so much more visible.

On my nvme drives (I nearly always use boot menu), the esc option flashes so quick for initialising, you have to be watching like a hawk to see it.
