Snipping Tool Captures then Hides

Snipping Tool use to present the snip in a newly opened window. Now it captures, saves, and closes. Then I have to go looking for the Pictures\Screenshots folder.

I’ve confirmed that the Print Screen key is set to opening Snipping Tool.

I’ve tried:

Repairing Snipping Tool
Uninstalling Snipping Tool (Print Screen and the following capture behaves the same.)
Reinstalling Snipping Tool from the Microsoft Store (Didn’t notice any difference.)

Is there a way to get the popup Snipping Tool viewer back?
Is it possible to uninstall Snipping Tool?
If not, is there a way to assign the Print Screen key to another app? (Just "PrintScreen" without any simultaneous keys.)

I tried to replicate it. When I use snipping tool (print screen key) after the screenshot it opens a fly-out window with the image at the bottom right corner, (above notifications area) I click on that and it will open for options. I take it you aren’t seeing that?

Correct. The after-action window no longer appears for me.

OK try this. Type snipping tool into the search bar, open it, click on the 3 dots and go to settings. Turn off automatically save screenshots. See if that helps?

Snipping tool

This is a minor problem, but very irritating. Until last update when I took a snip, the snip stayed on the screen for me to save/edit, whatever. Now as soon as I take a snip it disappears, and I have to click the taskbar icon to get it back. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Running 22H2...

Nothing happens when I select Snipping Tool from the search bar.
Is it possible a different snipping tool is running?
When I hit PrintScreen I get a dimmed screen with 5 options at the top:
1. Rectangle mode
2. Freeform mode
3. Window mode
4. Fullscreen mode
5. "x" (close)
Is that Snipping Tool?

I've checked running apps and don't see anything that might be doing screen capture like functions.
How do I determing what runs when I hit PrintScreen?

I removed the auto placement on the clipboard, and then it stays open at the top of the screen. That is until you save it, then it minimizes .

Yes, that is snipping tool.

On Windows 11, there are multiple ways to access Search. You can open the Start menu and use the Search box at the top of the page. Or you can open the Search home by clicking the magnifier icon in the Taskbar or using the "Windows key + S" keyboard shortcut

Once opened, you can type in snipping tool and then click on the icon for it. There you should have the options in my screenshots. Having said that, I don't know that it will make a difference as when I tried it, the edit window still didn't open less in the bottom right as I mentioned.

Also, that other thread may not produce much to your liking, it appears the general consensus is "Bad luck" unless you want to read it for other options.

Do you mean the top option in the screenshot above? I got no results from that. I also find this seriously frustrating.

This has been snipping tool's behavior for me for a long time now and I've gotten used to it.
A workaround -Pin snipping tool to taskbar. Take a snip either using the pinned icon or WIN+shift+S , click the icon on taskbar (again), a window pops up that allows snip to be saved.

Basically, he installs Snipping Tool from the Microsoft Store, disassociates the PrintScreen button from it. Then installs another snipping tool and gives it the PrintScreen button.
It works for now. I bet this functionality gets clobbered by the next Windows update.

. Another option floating around the web is to try and find the old copy of Snip & Sketch from windows 10. But can be complicated to achieve and you would want to ensure it hasn't been tampered with.

I suppose I could rip it out of my sons version of windows 10 which he is still running. Not sure what is supposed to be done with that after the fact as I haven't looked into it.

Try turning off auto save.

However, there is a bug since 22H2 that after capturing it goes behind all other windows open on the screen. This is actually a Windows 11 bug, as it happens to quite a few windows apps, not just snipping tool.

But for that newly opened window to show, auto save has to be off.

That was my initial suggestion but after testing out different things, it didn’t work. However I get a fly out after a screenshot which when clicked on opens snipping tool with the image. Not sure why I get it but not everyone. Maybe because I’m still running sn upgraded windows, not sure.

Yeah, I realize something that I didn't take into account before.

Using the print screen shortcut won't open the tool itself, the captured screenshot goes straight to the clipboard (if auto save is off) or to a folder and the clipboard (if auto save is on), but in either case you can manually open the ST from the notification in the action center.

Opening the app manually before taking a screenshot will put the screenshot in the app, regardless of whether save is on or off.
