Would it be useful to switch off / darken the monitor manually when you are not working on the notebook to save energy?

How could one do it?

With my old Notebook with Win 10 I could press Fn+F6 to do it?

@Donk

Hello and welcome to Eleven Forum.

You should probably find and download the user manual for your notebook.
Turning the monitor off should be doable with some key combination.

You can also go to Control Panel > Power Options, and...

Image1.png

I have mine set to turn off after 5 minutes of inactivity.
Then you just move the mouse or press a key to turn it back on.

There's also a couple tweaks to add it to your desktop right click menu...

This tweak will give you "classic" context menus...

And this one will add "turn off display" to the desktop right click menu...

It looks like this...

I especially like: "Lock the computer and turn off the display".
When I know I'll be gone for a while... I know that no one can get on my computer without the logon password.

Thank you very much!

Is there really usually a manual for this (HP Laptop »17-cn0623ng« 4J8T1EA #ABD) / each Notebook available? It is not Windows related? I cannot remember to ever had read about such in an manual.

You can also go to Control Panel > Power Options, and...

Try the last options then. Add Turn off display to the desktop right click menu.
Then you can just... turn off the display.
I don't know if this will turn off the music or not.
It "doesn't" turn the music off, on my desktop, in either my browser or music player.

As for a manual... you can usually find one by googling the make/model of the notebook with the word: manual
For an HP notebook, you'll probably have to "chat" with some HP person, to find one.

Here's a song to test with...

You're not from Walkabout Creek, are you? :-)

Go here and do steps 3 to 8 <--- this will give you the "classic' context menu.

Then go here and do steps 1 to 11... <--- this will add "turn off display" to that classic context menu.

After you do both... when you right click on your display, you will see this...
When you click on #2, it will turn off your display.

Image1.png

And as for HP... as I said before. There should be a way to turn off the display... built into the notebook.
HP will know where/what that method, is.

But if there is no manual findable on the Internet, I would think, even such a HP guy did not have one as well.

Many thanks for the great testing song. That will help a lot.

OK, I will try all of this. Hope, turning off the monitor can be done with a shortcut, clicking that option could be a bit inconvenient. Thank you very much!

In the movie Crocodile Dundee (1986), there was a character named Donk,
and he lived in Walkabout Creek, Australia. :-)
The guy on the left... is Donk. When I saw your account name, this is the 1st thing I thought of.

I had a client a few years ago that would call when her Notebook had nothing on the screen, turned out her weekly housekeeper was dusting things and inadvertently get the Fn + F10 keys pressed and toggled the screen to the VGA Projector/External Monitor port, after two such calls got the owner to recognize those keys toggled between the LCD Panel, the port or both at the same time.

So maybe I should get a duster...but this indeed works (without a duster): press and keep pressing Fn, then twice that monitor switcher key (do not know its name, here the F10 key) turns the Notebook monitor off (the second actually on, but that one, the TV, is switched off, so it does not matter (Ihope)), the same pressing again turns it on again.

Is the a way to creat another shortcut do this?

Getting manuals for your HP computer

Go to the HP website, hover your cursor on Support, select Software & drivers, identify your product including putting in your Serial number [or telling them to detect it].

In the upper right, above a photo of your type of computer, you'll see a link to Product homepage, click on it.

In the list on the left, click on the list for manuals.
Download the user guide and the [variously-named] Service guide.

Keep bookmarks of the webpage because you'll be able to get straight back to that list in the future to check, for example, for updated hardware drivers [also in the list on the left] & put in your serial number again if necessary to ensure the list is specifically for your hardware.
- I never let HP detect new drivers automatically any more. I always click on All drivers and look myself. Their automatic facility often says no updated drivers available even though the All drivers list shows that there are many new ones.

Best of luck,
Denis

I have been using NirCmd for many years with my old laptop and it was working with no problem. Today I tried it and my screen is behaving in a strange way! Its blinking on and off! I used this command: (async_off) and still have same behavior. Maybe due to the fact that on the new laptop I have two GPU (integrated intel UHD and Nvidia RTX3080)!

NirCmd turns off the music / sound as well (like the power button / energy saving button does).
Do you have an S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low power idle] computer as somebody mentioned earlier on?
Find out by using this command
Code:
PowerCfg -a

If you have S0 then it enters a special idle mode as soon as your screen turns off.
- S0 progressively inhibits all running processes except for thos MS has made special exceptions for [their Mail app, poss MSOffice Outlook, WU].

It's easy and also easily reversible so it's worth a shot to see if disabling S0 automatically enables S3 Sleep for you. It does for many people but didn't for me.

I also use a NirCmd shortcut to turn off my display without affecting anything else but I could not use it on my S0 computer because, just as S0 seems to be doing to you, everything turns to idle as soon as S0 kicks in, as soon as the display goes off. I can only use that shortcut on my S0 computer now that I've disabled S0 on it.
Code:
...\NirCmd.exe monitor off
I did use a sort of halfway house approach for a while but decided that disabling S0 was better.
- I set the display to stay on forever in Power options
- I set up a screensaver to kick in on demand by creating a shortcut to it. I used a screensaver that was almost a black screen. I could not find a screensaver that avoided giving any glow off the screen at all so none of them were quite the same as letting the display turn off.

All the best,
Denis

So it somehow sounds like it would not work here.

Thank you for the link!

You do not have S0 [you have a proper computer with S3 Sleep] so there should be nothing to stop you turning off your display using the same NirCmd shortcut as me.
This command does not affect audio playback or any other activities.
...\NirCmd.exe monitor off
Insert the path to wherever you've stuck NirCmd in place of my ...
