OS
Windows 11
I cannot get my system restore to work - the button is greyed out.

I've tried all the suggested registry and gpedit mods but no change.

Any ideas?

Which version of Windows 11? Have you actually configured it? I don't use it myself (I use Macrium Backup/Restore for protection) and hence my system properties looks like this (settings -> about -> system protection):

Check for and fix possible system file corruptions. Open a command prompt (admin) and type SFC /ScanNow

If SFC finds corruption it cannot fix, use DISM to repair the component store, then try SFC again.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Well, that's obviously the issue. If all drives are off why would it offer to create a restore point? You need to turn on a drive. Preferably the drive you want to create the Restore Point on ;-)

I cannot get my system restore to work - the button is greyed out.

What errors are you seeing in Event Viewer or Reliability Monitor? Can you run the latter via perfmon /rel in a command prompt and post the output?

The exception code indicates a memory addressing problem so clearly a program defect of some sort.

    Windows Defender
It won't let me system restore on for any drive. Nothing happens when I click on a drive to try and enable it.

You need to enable a drive. The drives also need to be in the NTFS file format.

That said, are your drives using NTFS file format?

It's been established that when the OP clicks on "Configure", a program fault occurs and the session is aborted - see above posts. Nothing the OP can do about that - needs MS to fix the program fault.

Missed that. That said, my question about the drives stand - NTFS?

@anparkinson, are you running an insider edition of Windows 11? Could be a bug there.

See post #13 where the diagnostics say "Application Version: 10.0.22621.1", ie Windows 11 Beta.

Also I don't believe you can install Windows 11 on other than an NTFS drive?
