Thumbnail size: Too small & not large enough

Hi all,

When I use ctrl + mouse-wheel to increase the thumbnail size in a folder there are only a few sizes (all very small). And the largest setting is not even increasing the size but just increasing the white space between the thumbnails.

Is there a way to make them larger than the size mentioned above ?

You may want to give the Magnifier App a try. It is included in Windows 11. You can find it in Windows settings. I have attached a screen shot. One can setup how the application starts and what level of magnification you desire.

I just would like to increase the photo thummbnail size.

Standard Windows11 setting (note screenshot below) is kind of riduculous , , ,

BUMP, any one ? Perhaps there is a third-part tweakertool too to fix this issue ?

View > Extra large icons seems to be what you want. If it doesn't enlarge the thumbnails immediately, try pressing F5 to refresh the view.

Hi Bree. That is the setting I am using. Beats me why windows is not able to used the white space and create thumbnails of a decent size.

Have you tried pressing F5 a few times? It should refresh the thumbnails.

Are you talking about desktop icons or thumbnails in folders.

For desktop --simply ctrl + scroll middle / ring on mouse. I think its the same in file explorer too.

Are your thumbnails appearing to be small even at the largest setting because of the large resolution display you are using [2880x1800]?
Perhaps Windows cannot offer anything better for such a display adapter?
I have no experience of such large resolution displays.

My System One's Radeon Graphics can give me virtual resolutions up to 2560x1440 on my native resolution 1366x768 screen.



The whitespace does vary a bit depending on the resolution and scaling I choose, but nothing like as huge as in your screenshot it post #3.

2560x1440 (125%)


1366x768 (100%)

Yes. Seems the max standard windows setting still results in small thumbnails. Perhaps it can be tweaked in the registerd?

Thumbnails in folders. Seems the setting is broken, because the last couple of settings (using the scroll wheel) the thumbnails stay the same size and only the white space between them increases.

Hi Denis, the resolution I am using is 2880 x 1800 on a 14,5" screen. Seems the setting is broken, because the last couple of settings (using the scroll wheel) the thumbnails stay the same size and only the white space between them increases.

Hi Bree, would like to use that Custom Scaling setting. But at the moment the settings box is empty. How do I figure out my current setting so I can go back to what I had just in case ?

I haven't had any issues with the icons using the Recommended screen resolutions on my desktops and Notebooks, 1920x1080. Then depending on the screen size I set the Scaling to 125%, 150% or 175% with the largest being on a 27" monitor. This is the 14" Notebook I'm on now with the Extra Large setting in File Explorer:
